Which Spyderco? - (I've been spoilt by Kershaw)

Well, I'm in a dilemma atm.

S90V Spy-Mil OR CPMS30V Spyker

Hmmm... this is going to be 'difficult'.

My stance, having so many Kershaws and ZT's and NO Spydercos was to get the Military. It was pretty easy for me to decide plus the Military is NOT recurved which I have PLENTY of already. The Spyker looks a lot like a speed/spec bump to me.

Good luck on your choice . . .

I'm leaning towards a Military for now. One question though - if the blade generates play is it possible to tighten the pivot nut?

You are concerned that Spyderco might not be up to the quality of Kershaws? I've owned many of both knives and while Kershaw makes some decent knives I do believe Spyderco has them beat by a mile. Spyderco's fit the hand (at least mine) way better. IMHO they use better steel and fit and finish on my Spyderco's has been impeciable.

Thanks for that.

How thick is the liner lock on the Military. I can'tt seem to find closeup pics of it.

Don't worry about the thickness. It's fine. It looks thin but it clicks open with such authority you will have no problem trusting the Military. It's a light, thin, tough knife and an incredible slicer.

They say that the SpyKer looks like a Kershaw, feels like a Spyderco. Seeing how most guys fall firmly into one camp or another that made it a fairly unpopular collaboration.

You can tighten the Military pivot screw. It's a very strong knife, but very light, so if you need the heft or thickness of a ZT, you may be disappointed. If you want a large folder that's reliable and easy to carry, you won't be disappointed.

Spykers are no longer made. Very cool knife, but not that easy to find.

I have a 'feeling' I might be dissappinted then but I really wanted to use the S90V.

Will Spyderco use the CPM-S90V for future knives? I think I might hold-off until then.

My preference is now:

CPM-S90V blade (4")
Thick Steel Liners
Sculpted G10 Scales (Like the Kershaw ZT 0200 but the D-Allara texture design) with a bulge in the middle.
Ball lock
Combi edge
Full spacer (like the ZT 0302)

This would be my uber Spyderco knife.

You might be able to tell now that I like mine built like tanks.

Spyderco Stretch II

"ZDP-189 blade steel is the hottest, hardest and highest performing blade steel in the knife industry today. 3% of its component ingredient is pure carbon making the steel harder and in turn extending its edge retention. At press, Spyderco was one of a handful of cutlers around the world working with ZDP-189 blades, offering it on several models including their C90 Stretch folder.

The C90 Stretch started as a pet-project lockback knife design. Spyderco's owner and chief designer made it for his personal use, incorporating features he wanted. He wanted high performance blade steel with edge retention super-powers for outdoor cutting: things like wood, rope and anything encountered in the wild. It had to work equally well indoors on cardboard, mail and fingernails. He sized it so it wouldn't scare non-knife people and made it look slick on the off chance he'd someday have to wear a suit. The handle is peel-ply carbon fiber, with a four-way clip, left/right-hand and tip-up/tip-down. Blade is full flat ground, solid ZDP-189. The C90CFP exemplifies all that is Spyderco, function, high performance, advanced materials and workmanship in an out-of-the-ordinary package.

If you can get your hands on a Manix by all means try. It's another great knife and it is built heftier than most Spydercos. If you like the ZT and Kershaw's heavier designs you may find it quite to your liking. But good luck finding one... I'm not letting go of any of mine!

The Chinook I, II, and III are also very hefty "tanks," especially the Chinook II. Check out the forums on Spyderco's website for pics, reviews, etc.

He has probably never even held a spyderco before. Kershaw's are alright quality wise, but it mostly depends what you compare them too. Obviously if you carry a sebenza or william henry every day and you hold one itll seem noticebly "cheaper" (which is a complex issue) but if your point of reference is a 5 dollar flea market knife then itll seem the opposite.

oh, and ZT quality is awesome, way better than the normal kershaw line imho.

If you're not already a British Blades member, you may want to check it out:

It would be great if you could connect with some of the guys and get your hands on some different Spyderco models. You might find something you wouldn't have thought you'd fancied.
