Which Spyderco Now?

I have enjoyed carrying and (sort of) collecting knives for awhile. Until recently I carried a Benchmade (for SD/MBC) in my right pocket and a SAK in my left. I really got intrigued by my first Spyderco when a friend took Michael Janich's class and showed me his newly aquired Yojimbo. So I promptly went out and bought a Blue Yojimbo and a Ronin. I ended up buying 3 more Yojimbos to give as gifts, awesome knife!

What I would like to get next is a second EDC Spyderco that will do duty in my left front pocket. I do not want to use my Yojimbo for anything but MBC. While the powers that be here in Colorado allow me the pleasure of packing a .45 Auotmatic they do not allow me to carry a knife with a blade greater than 3.5" (yeah I know, they are idiots)

What do you recommend I should purchase as a knife that I can use for those everyday cutting tasks that I don't want to use the Yo for? Also should I get PE or SE for everyday use?

It should be left hand compatible.
Blade under 3.5" (shorter is probably better)
Tip down is ok as it wont be an SD knife (I prefer tip up for SD)
It would be used for opening boxes, mail, cutting bailing twine, peeling fruit etc.

Dodo Blue G-10 ~ C80GBL
Lil' Temperance G-10 ~ C69G
Calypso Jr. Gray FRN ~ C52GY
Salsa Aluminum Blue ~ C71BL
Cricket FRN ~ C29BK

What do you guys (and gals) think?

I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,
Cameron

by all means, a Caly Jr. is in order. they're very inexpensive, and they've become quite the edged celebrity around these parts lately... for good reason! i have one and i love it!

+1 for the Caly Jr.

FYI- If you did not know the Caly Jr will get an upgrade later this spring/summer with new ZDP super steel, so I don't know if you'd want to wait, or just get both :D

Dodo, or Caly.

If you're going to be peeling fruit, you'll want the Caly (for the straighter blade). But I love the Dodo's blade for the opening of boxes, mail, ect.

Imho, the Dodo is hands down the best box cutter and utility knife in the Spyderco arsenal. :D

I also live in Colorado. I think the folk down in Golden could best answer your question.

I was under the impression that 4" or less was the rule in Colorado.

I'm trying to chose a replacement EDC/MBC for my spyderco police model. Its way to big to carry.

Looking at centrofante, Chinook II, persian, and mill/para-mil.

Open to sugestions. I love the Chinook the best, because of the blade shape.

What do you all think?

bisonman,
check the Colorado revised statues, 3.5" is the max. Over that and it is considered a WEAPON and is additionally not covered (anymore) by a Concealed Weapons Permit if you have one.

Colorado Revised Statues

18-12-105. Unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon - unlawful possession of weapons.
Statute text

(1) A person commits a class 2 misdemeanor if such person knowingly and unlawfully:

(a) Carries a knife concealed on or about his or her person; or...

18-12-101. Definitions.

(f) "Knife" means any dagger, dirk, knife, or stiletto with a blade over three and one-half inches in length, or any other dangerous instrument capable of inflicting cutting, stabbing, or tearing wounds, but does not include a hunting or fishing knife carried for sports use. The issue that a knife is a hunting or fishing knife must be raised as an affirmative defense.

Be careful...

Thanks for the update. Maybe I will go with the centofante, the persian or the para mil then...

My instructor (when I took the CCW NRA class) told us we could carry any knife concealed that we wanted to. Was he wrong?

As for the next, definitely the Calypso Jr. Get one while you still can...

That depends on which state you are in. If it is Colorado then your instructor is NOW wrong. Previously your instructor was correct as it was a Concealed WEAPONS Permit, now it is a Concealed HANDGUN Permit and you can be charged with a crime for carrying a knife with a blade over 3.5 inches.
