Just took apart my ATR and found it had one of those plastic washers. I don't really like them the especially since they are hard to replace and can get folded over and bend to easy causing damage to the washer.

Which sydercos don't have these plastic washers? I know the tenacious has thin brass ones but are there any spydercos which carry some quality washers like CRK does?

My Para-Military has phosphor bronze bushings in it. It opens smoother than anything I've ever owned, like it has ball bearings in the pivot.

I think that most Spyderco folders have the PB (phosphor-bronze) washers. I don't have any with plastic washers.

Well the ATR defiinetly has plastic ones. Surprised the heck out of me since IMO the ATR is is one of the best made spydercos. At least the quality control seems better than other models with better fit and finsh and always a centered blade. i have owned several of them and like them. i just wish it did not have a plastic washer. i wonder if i could get a PB washer to replace them.

Thin washers should be better than thick washers- from what I've heard, thicker washers are revealing of lesser workmanship, or allow more sloppiness.

Bet the folks over on the Chris Reeve forum would get a chuckle out of that. Think you've been listening to the wrong "experts".

As for plastic washers. While the ATR may very well have them, and a number of models did at one time, I don't believe any currently manufactured Spyderco, or any made in the past two years or more, uses them. AFAIK, any current models which have washers use phosphor bronze ones.

Ah. I was asking because there are "nylatron" washers that are sort of a mid-point between PB and nylon. Some custom makers actually prefer them. But I'm pretty sure that white = nylon and I agree, nylon is a less desireable materials choice by a pretty big margin. OTOH, you can probably pretty easily find PB or nylatron replacements.

That's similar to those used by Mcusta too . . .

my Barong also has nylotron washers but the operation is so silky smooth that it never occured to me some may see them as a downgrade in quality

Nylatron washers are actually more expensive than PB washers. Check out knifekits if you dont believe me. Nylatron washers are actually becoming quite popular, many custon makers are now using them because they make for an even smoother opening than the good old PB. They actually never need to be lubricated because they have some sort of a lubricant impregnated in them that supposedly never wears out.

Nylatron washers may not have the all-metal appeal, but they are not a downgrade.

BTW, my hunch that white = nylon is just that. Every nylatron washer I've seen is dark gray, but there may be other variations. (?)
