Which Spydie to get next?

So many Spydies, so little time :)

I've got some money and want to buy another Spydie, so help me out! I currently own an SE FRN Dragonfly, a 440V PE Native, a VG-10 FRN Calypso Jr. (black) and a VG-10 PE FRN Delica. I'm really digging the 3" and under Spyderknives, but that's a loose constraint :)

My list so far is:
- Gray Calypso Jr. (since the one I have is a bit rounded at the tip)
- VG-10 Harpy
- Salsa
- PE Dragonfly (SS or FRN)
- Dodo

This will be for EDC, and should be light enough to sit in slacks pockets without falling over and creating an embarrasing bulge :)

So what do you think? Something off my list? Something else? Put your suggestions here and let me know why!

Thanks,

Matthew

Well if you like your black Calypso Jr, the grey one is identical, except for the colors of the FRN and clip. Harpy might be a tad heavier that you'd like, the FRN Merlin is much lighter. I find the hawkbill blade a poor choice for most of what I do with a knife, YMMV. Dragonfly in FRN is very light, although personally I'm not fond of the built in FRN clip on it, again YMMV. If you can snag one of the CF ones, they are almost as light and, in my opinion, a lot classier looking. The stainless one is a good bit heavier, but still in the range I'd consider an acceptable light pocket carry. Have no experience with the others you mention. Two not on your list that might be worth consideration are the Kiwi, either in stainless or jigged bone, and the Navigator. The Kiwi is one of my favorites, nice little gent's knife, very socially acceptable, and it rides real nicely in a pocket. As a bonus, wharncliffe blade is a breeze to sharpen. While I find the Navigator slippery, many do not, and the larger hole makes it easier for some folks to open than the Dragonfly. You can find them pretty cheap right now, so that's a plus for it.

The Ed Schempp Persian folder is probably the best deal going, bang-for-the-buck wise. Cheers.

How about the Lil'T? It's about the size of a Delica but much, much stronger. Full flat grind, S30 blade, G-10 handles with dual nested steel liners and MBC rated compression lock.

The Persian is a great buy for the type of materials and design features you are getting. In fact I was very suprised at how little they were selling for. Mine is now on the way.

With that said though my preferred Spydie of choice is still my Gunting. Live blade or drone...it doesn't matter...

(this might not help your 'bulge' problem though)

The Scorpius is a great design and cutter. It may be a little heavy for your tastes, but it is very thin and massively strong! I drilled extra holes in mine to lighten it a bit- looks really cool and it is a great performer!

The ATR is the One to buy!

There simply is no question, it's one of the great knives of 2004!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm unsure about the Lil' T since I do not know how well it would ride unclipped in slacks. Any users out there who know?

The Persian and the ATR - too big for me, I think - I'd really like to keep it at around 3".

The Paramilitary...no question about it, but how much longer? :)

The Lil' Temp is a great knife - but it is a relatively big-handled knife. The handle is wide and thick. I don't know if it would create an "embarassing" bulge but it would be a noticeable bulge in anything but loose fitting pants. Like the Salsa and the Dodo, it is one of Spyderco's big/little knives - shorter blades with hand-filling handles.

How about a Native III in VG-10 - great design and great steel?

4 ster,

I have the Native in 440V. It was my first Spyderco, as well as my first "real" knife. I liked it then, but for some reason it has fallen out of favor with me. If I were to pick up another Native design, I think it would have to be the same one I have now, but with S30V steel.

Thanks for the info on the Lil' Temp and the Salsa. I've handled the Dodo as part of a passaround, and think that would be thin enough to ride. My concern with the Lil' Temp stems from the guard area - it looks like the side protrudes in that area.

Thanks,

Matthew
