hi,

i'm a newbie to this forum and to knives generally so hope there are no flames. just registered a minute ago. actually, i've been lurking in bladeforums for the past month - reading everyone else's comments etc. i have learnt alot just by looking at all the comments. my current blade is a CQC7BTS - but sigh, some problems with a loosening pivot pin.

i'm thinking of getting my first spyderco and am looking at both the VG10 PE endura and delica. can someone help me decide - delica's a tad too small, endura's a tad too big. which is more suitable?

also, PE or SE (useful to cut rope, right?)? or 50/50. it's mainly for general utility but i plan to carry it during my tramping/bushwhacking trips and paddling excursions.

anor thing, does anyone want to part with a Rookie G10 scales plain edge? I much prefer G10 to FRN and I wished the delica/endura came with G10. the ones on sale at ebay are all SE.

thanks,
spyken:D

If you're looking for something between the Delica and Endura in size then take a look at the Native. Great steel and design. A good price too!

Besides PE and SE it also comes in a 35% plain/65% serrated configuration which should be a good compromise.

The Native is one of my Spydie favorites!

Welcome to the forums!
:) You cant go wrong with Spyderco, the Delica, Endura and Native are all great knives, i'm sure you can find something in the range to suit your needs. I would advise plainedge unless you mainly cut fibrous materials (string, rope, fabric etc), a plain edge knife with a coarse edge will do a very good job with these anyways.
About your CQC7, just in case you haven't already, it might be advisable to tighten your pivot pin as much as you want then apply some loctite, it should hold up well. Alternatively you could contact EKI.
Have a good one.

Welcome: A Vesuvius might fit what you are looking for It is in between the size of a delica and endura.

I prefer the Endura for EDC because the handle fits my hand a little better than the smaller Delica. For basic EDC use, I've found that I prefer a plain edge. I don't like 50/50 edges so, I either go with plain edge or fully serrated.

I just got one of the new Enduras with VG-10 steel. I havn't had a chance to test it out yet but, I think it's a definite improvement over ATS-55.

Welcome to the forums, spyken.:D

My first Spydie was the Delica SE, in VG-10, and I got pretty comfortable with it, carrying it for my EDC and around the house chores too. I decided to buy the VG-10 Endura SE, after some consideration about its' size and my local carry laws. My first impression of this Spydie was that it was TOO BIG for EDC. Boy was I wrong. I carry it more than my Delica now. Everything about this knife is more appealing to me, mainly because of my big hands, as well as, its' more aggressive serrated look, and larger blade.

These two Spydies are great EDCs, but for something in between I suggest taking a look at the Native. No matter what knife you choose, you won't regret it. Each knife has that excellent Spyderco quality. Besides, you'll end up getting those other Spydies anyway. Just one Spyderco is never enough...

Beware of that Spydie virus...it spreads with no mercy. Once it has you, there is no escape.

Welcome aboard dude! :D

Why not check out the Vesuvius? Its got your specs, value for money and all the cutting power you'll need.. ;)

thanks for the help. I did consider the Native, but prefer the "hump" look of blade of the other spydies like Delica, Endura, Military. I handled the Vesuvius last week, but didn't exactly like the "compression" lock. the size was good tho'. Guess I'll get both the Delica and Endura! question is should I get PE or SE for the endura? :(

Samo, where do you buy your spydies from?

Does anyone have any Rookie plain edge they want to part with? I really like the G10 scales! :D

If you can find one, I'd go with a Calypso Jr. lightweight. It feels really good in the hand and cuts like a monster. Personally, it's my favorite.

Dude ~ I frequent Sheares at 43 Beach Road (62700337) and SNG Arms at Terengganu Street. Good selection, a bit pricey, but its all there..

If this knife is going to be a daily use knife for lighter jobs like box-cutting, letter-opening, and the like, I'd go with the Delica. It may look small, but it will get almost any job done.

If this will be an outdoor-use knife, where more blade length is an issue, get the Endura.

I have the Endura as a substitution for another knife that the store was out of stock on. When I first opened the box and opened the blade, my first thought was, good lord, that's a lot of knife. I carry it as a self-defense piece, but luckily I've never had to use any knife in a confrontation.

May I suggest another possibility? The Calypso Jr Lwt. is getting a little harder to find, but many online stores still carry them. The Calypso and Calypso Jr. were a more ergonomic and "gentlemanly" take on the large and small knife pair, with an integrated choil and a leaf-shaped, full flat ground blade. The Calypso Jr. is a nice little knife, perfect for a small everyday carry. It's Delica-sized, but fits the hand better (my hand, at least), and it's the right size for most everyday chores. The blade isn't quite as strong as the Delica, due to the full flat grind as opposed to the flat saber grind of the Delica, but we're talking steel here, so it won't bend out of shape easily, even when whittling. It also hides itself well in a front pocket or waistband, better than the Delica or Endura with their barrel-screw clips.

mebbe I don't know johnny or william well, but Sheares is super pricey (for always-out-of-cash me at least)! endura's going for SGD120! it works out the same after shipping charges but if I have a bulk order, I save quite a fair bit. the people at sng arms are not knowledgeble at all, and that's a put off. I think I learnt more from this forum than from the shops!:D what's it like over up where you are? are your blades for edc, collection or outdoors/military/leo/emt?

Well Spyken ~ You can't have them all.. Shops like SNG Arms and Sheares are well established and are perhaps the only truely dedicated knifeshops in the whole of Singapore.. :( I might have missed the one at Suntec City.. Need to check this one out.. But to ship them in via post seems too risky.. If you don't mind the anxiety and nerve-wrecking wait, then its alright.. I don't need to explain why shops like Sheares are pricey cos they do have overheads.. Brick and mortar establishments do mark up their prices.. Its the same here in Malaysia, because we pay six times as much buying Spyderco knives off the shelves.. But the choice is definitely yours.. You can choose to sell, trade and buy through this forum and I guess most of the people that hangout here deserve plenty of praise for being highly in the know as well as courteous in guiding newbies.. ;) Well, my knives are mainly EDCs.. Have some in my collection like the workers in two screws.. :D
