which steel

They are both good steels. I have found similar performance, but the maker, blade geometry, heat treatment and other factors will matter more than the steel.
Fallkniven sells good knives in laminated VG10, but there are also very good knives out there in 154CM.
Oops, I responded to your question in terms of Vg10, not VG1.
I would rather have VG10 or 154cm than VG 1. There is no vanadium in VG 1, and this alloy makes for a fine edge.

ya that is what i noticed looking at the steel config compared to vg-10, but vg 10 is so expensive

i was looking at the blackbird sk-5 by ontario in 154cm,and the cold steel san mai III srk in a vg-1 lamination.
what r ur thoughts on the different knives?

What kind of "outdoor tasks" did you have in mind?

VG1 holds an edge about as well as 154CM.
Laminated VG1 will be tougher than 154CM, and the VG1 core will still hold an edge equally well. The purpose of using a laminate is to increase toughness while maintaining edge retention.

Which KNIFE do you like better? All these modern day formulations will perform perfectly fine for what they were designed to do: cut. You'll go loony mulling over grain structure, .00001 more of some unpronounceable element, etc.
