Which should I choose for the field. I like a strider folder.

A Strider GB or a Strider AR?

What is the real diff in a tanto point and a drop point? I know the tanto point is meant for tip strength in penetration.

They are both good knives, but they are both quite thick. I personally prefer the SNG because it's thinner, and is much more comfortable when I carry it in my pocket. I just wanted to make sure you knew this.
As far as Tanto vs. Drop point, it's pretty much personal preference. I think a drop point would probably be better for field work.

I second the SNG, but if you got your heart set on the two, I would go for the AR because I am not a fan of tanto's. I am lookin to get the RC(FNG) as soon as they start shipping, that'll be my baby.

SNG, the price seems to reflect your comfort! I have to admit it would be my first choice, but the price makes me bite my lip.

BTW, apologizes for not introducing myself.

I am a senior in college in Boston, currently in the army reserves and will graduate as a 2LT in the US ARMY ACTIVE, branch INFANTRY!

I like cigars, beer and women (not in that order). I've gotten great information on this forum and have great ideas for EDC items like the flashlights.

I love knives as I use them for work and just enjoy the general asthetics. I prefer SAK (Soldier, Spartan Lite, Midnight Manager, Camper) for day to day (Due to our laws) spydercos ( have a rescue 93MM, Endura, Delica), and of course my EMERSON CQC-11 for the field and when I am in uniform. I also carry a SAK black multi tool in uniform as well.

Looking to get a strider folder and probably a 5-6 inch strider fixed blade before I graduate.

Both are excellent! I personally LOVE the tanto, so I would get the GB!! OOOH, if you can get one, get a TAD Gear/Strider Ranger Green GB, with tritium thumbstuds. THAT baby ROCKS!!

I would go with the AR if I had to pick between the two but if I had to pick a strider folder I would get an SMF.

I think I might go for an SNG since I have smaller hands.

3.5 inch vs 4. Not much of a diff, but the handle size of the SNG seems more suitable.

The SNG is awesome!!! I would personally prefer ab SMF. The AR & GB's are large knives!! Excellent knives, as I have had both.

The AR is going to be your most well rounded knife between the AR & GB. The blade shape offers more utility use. The GB does look cooler though.

When ever I think I might be in harms way I take my AR over all my other knives.

I'd go for the AR. I love mine and carry it in conjunction with a PT most days lately. The SNG is a great knife too, but if you want a big, strong folder the AR can't be beat IMO. It is big, but you get used to it pretty quickly and now it doesn't seem all that big any more.

my 2 cents, the R/GB were designed to replace fixed blade knives iwhere fbs are prohibitted. If you are planning on carrying a fb and a folder I would consider some smaller more easily carried and IMO more useful knives. The R really doesn't offer much useable edge considering its size, which is really damn big. An SNG or even a PT for strider offerings might serve you better and be far more easily toutable especially in conjuction with other gear. There are a lot of great folders out there though taht will prove strong and sharp and etremely useful and don't cost what an R or GB costs. This isn't in anyway to bash Strider knives its only that these knives were designed the way they were to deal with a specific situation and if that situation doesn't apply to you then I think its worth considering some of the other great folders out there. For the cost of an R you could get a great hard use folder that would be much easier to carry and a top end multitool and still have a hundred bucks left over. Again, not bashing Strider, just saying if you've got a Strider fixed blade then take a look at some other options that may serve you just as well if not better.

Its more to build a collection of hard use folders. I think people are right on with the SNG, but it is alot of scratch. It will be bought in the next few months probably. I'm liking my Emerson alot and I use the crap out of it. But I just seem to have a knife buying itch.

No I do not own a strider fixed blade currently. But I do plan on buying one in the next year or so to strap to my vest in the field.

You can usually find a used one for a bit cheaper on the forums or ebay. Even if it's beat to hell you can send it to the Striderguys and they will make it new again. (Except for the finish but if you don't mind a long wait they will do that for you too.)

I've got a couple of GBs and have had a couple ARs and I prefer the GBs for some reason. BUT... if I were spending the cash I'd go with one of the framelocks. I usually have a SMF or SnG on me, as the AR/GB is quite a bit bigger in the pocket.
