im looking for a medium to large sub $100 Folder that you guys can see as strong enough to Baton Wood with. I Do already have a BM 550HG griptillian which definitely seems like it would be up to this task. any input would be appreciated! also sadly fixed blades are out of the question, ive had legal issues in the past with some rather prying park rangers at joshua tree national park.

so basically i need a sub 100 dollar strong as hell knife to use while camping

Cheers!

Cold Steel Rajah II or American Lawman. The Tri-Ad lock seems really tough.

I've know a few people that tried to baton w/ a pocket bushman and it didn't hold up well at all. Could have been bad luck, but maybe not. It's not an expensive knife so breaking it wouldn't be the end of the world.

IMO does not exist. Battoning is hard enough on a fixed blade, I would not expect even the strongest $100+ folders to stand up to prolonged and repeated battoning.

Honestly, my opinion has always been, if you need to chop or split wood, get a hatchet or axe and do it properly. Battoning is at best an emergency field expedient, not something I ever plan on doing on a routine basis.

Could you elaborate on this? To the best of my knowledge there are no federal laws restricting fixed blades in national parks. Is there really a law involved, or are the rangers just being tree-hugging, hoplophobic dicks?

I bought off ebay a cheap China made NAVY folder with a compression lock that looks alot like a para mili. I have battoned with that with no problems. That is what made me buy it in the first place too. The fella that sells them batons through alot bigger branch than I did with no ill effects. I am tellin ya for a cheap knife it is extremely well made, go figure right. keepem sharp

cold steel pocket bushman. its like 25 dollars , and built like a tank.

The way they styled that lock it's a two handed knife at best. The spring tension is such that if it were to snap shut on your fingers you're going to have some serious problems.

Get a Manix 2. :)

What sub $100 knife is the best for scoring glass sheets for windows? Oh, how about a glass cutter?

Which blade design turns screw best? Try a screwdriver!

There's no such thing as a folder that should be repeatedly batoned: buy a frickin' hatchet or axe. If you're backpacking buy one of those wire or cable saws. They invented other tools besides knives for a reason.

If you baton with a folder expect to be dissapointed eventually. They aren't designed for that kind of abuse. Parts WILL begin to fit a little looser than they used to and you WILL have a folder with a lot of slop and play to it. And eventually it will more than likely fail on you when you need it most. Right tool for the job. If you must baton with a knife, a fixed blade is the only way to go. I would only baton with a folder if my life depended on it. I wouldn't plan to take one camping for such a purpose when I could have brought an axe or hatchet or even a machete. Just MHO. Good luck in your search.

CS Bushman has worked for me that being said I would not do prolonged batoning with any folder.
Now to the point of Legality have they showed you the Law/rule that says no Fixed Blade in the park or are the making it up as I cannot find it and I do go to National Parks and had no such problem.

I will baton any of your folders.

If you think about what you actually use a knife for while in the woods, you will realize that your Griptilian is perfect for the job. Batoning wood is about the least productive thing you can do in the woods, right beside harassing slugs and hunting snipes. You need a knife that will cut and hold up to lots of cutting. That knife my friend is a Griptilian! I have many many knives, some of which are marketed as extreme hard-use knives, yet I carry a Griptilian while I am hunting, fishing, and hiking. I have a Bravo-1 and a Mora in my pack for the more heavy duty tasks that require a fixed blade (batoning is not one of them).

I have batoned with a SAK and a buck 110 both cheap as dirt for the quality. that being said i agree with every comment thrown up here about the right tool for the job...i've done it, mostly to see how it would go, but would i recommend it? no.
a folding saw wouldn't raise any eyebrows, and doesn't pack the weight of a hatchet. so does that count as a folder? if so go for a folding saw 100%
