hi guys. im going to be buying a swamp rat soon for my camping/hunting/whatever knife, but i dont know if i should go with the camp tramp or the ratweiler. i like the looks of the ratweiler a lot more, but its also more expensive, and i dont know if it is as well suited for outdoor use like the camp tramp is. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys.

ANY swamp ratwill do the job. The HR is a great knife which can also do some light chopping. Didn't believe it till I tried it myself. If you want something bigger, the Camp Tramp will do it. It can chop as well as slice. Head over to the rat forums, and check it out.

The Camp Tramp is an awesome knife it will do just about anything you want to do. Most of the guys that are just not into Res-C handles go with the Ratweiler by all accounts it is a great knife as well. Personally I like the shock dampening properties of the Res-c and the more neutral shaped handle. Both are great knives and I don't see you be dissapointed with either.

For what you've described the Res-C handles on the Camp Tramp will be superior in most regards. Micarta is more "high class" but not necessarily more functional. Res-C is a very hard rubber, so it has great durability, but it also has a great deal more shock absorbtion and overall comfort during use than micarta handles. Still, the most important thing here is that you get something you aren't dissapointed in. Unless you plan on doing signifigant amounts of chopping without gloves then the Ratweiler will perform just as well as the Camp Tramp, and I find textured micarta just feels really good in the hand.

I say get the battle rat. It is great, and my EDC.

Man, you must be WAAAAAAY out in the sticks if you can EDC a BR! More power to ya!

The CT and the RW are basicly the same blade. Get whatever suits your fancy (and pocketbook), the best. Can't go wrong with either one.

BTW I've had my CT going on 3 yrs. Just flat out LOVE it! Love the HR the best, but my wife stole it and you sound like you want something larger. GREAT KNIFE (s). You pick.

I'd pick the Ratweiler (one of my favorite knives). The handle allows a variety of grip options for different jobs, and it's easy to round any edges on the micarta that cause discomfort.

its all comes down to what type of handle you like. with the RW you get more differnt types of grip and in the end more chopping power. but with the CT you have the res c handle and thus it is better on your hands when you chop. also it keeps your hands warmer in the cold. they are both great knifes in the end it just matters on what you want. go to www.swamprat.com and do a search on the camp tramp and the RW. this question comes up time and time again. (everyhting here has been said for the most part, and in the end if you can not choose just get both :) )

or for both res c and even greater chopping power, get the Battle Rat. ;) Hell, collect the entire set. It is inevitable :D

Actually, I carry it everywhere, even at work (sign maker/designer), and no one has even noticed it. The handle is partially obscured by my shirt, and the bottom end of the sheath I either tie down, or slip into the handy side pocket on my carpenter jeans. the small sheath pouch is the perfect size for my Buck 110, also. Ultimately though, I am going to create a dundee rig. I just need to first obtain some hardware. :D

P.S.: I do live in the sticks, if a 25 minute drive from a town of less than 15,000 is rural enough for you :D :D

I'd go the 2 knife way...
1 Battle Rat and 1 Howling Rat
Perfect Combo. My favourite fixed blade is the Howling Rat. It's just such a nice size for most things.

If you want only one knife go with the Camp Tramp.
