We see a lot of discussions about one knife scenarios. Questions like "What knife would you pick if you could only have one?" or "What's the one knife you always carry?" or "If you could spend an hour with any famous person in the world, what knife would you buy and why?" But we're knife people. How many of us just carry one knife? I don't even walk out my door of a morning with less than two knives on me.

For daily carry, I have an Eskabar and a Victorinox Farmer, and when I go to the woods, I add the BK9. I feel confident that I can handle nearly anything with a big knife, small knife, and a swiss army knife. Some may prefer to bring a hatchet or a saw.

What say you? You have your fire starting device, a water container, some 550 cord, what cutting tools do you reach for?

What is your "knife trifecta"? (And surely at least one of them is a Becker)

There's actually a name for the three knife bushcraft system, so named after a famous historic outdoorsman. But I cannot for the life of me remember his name or what the system is called. It starts with an "N" though. Was he an author too?

I guess my favorite is trio is:
Small - Benchmade Griptilian 551
Medium - Becker BK-2
Large - 12" Coldsteel Sax machete or my 12" KHHI Chinautee khukuri

But I'll probably throw my SOG powerlock in there too. I love these threads.

a traditional Nessmuk trio would be folder, fixed, and axe
i.e. vik huntsman, BK12 and Hudson bay pattern 3/4 size pack axe.
if we're looking for things I currently own and leave the axe out, then vik huntsman, BK14, and ESEE6. :D (folding saw is a good thing, too)

When in the great outdoors, it's always the BK9, and my smaller knife is sometimes the BK2, but talking strictly recreational outdoor use here, it's more often something lighter-weight, usually my Fallkniven F1.

Recently (like, when I first clicked into this forum), I've developed a hankerin' for either a BK11 or 14 (though I know now that I'll eventually end up with both). I'm leaning towards the 14 just because I'm not real crazy about the end of the handle on the 11. Seems it could really hurt having to use it for some tasks without decent gloves on, and since I'm a teetotaler (I don't drink), I have no use for the bottle opener anyway. I'll have to get the 14 before I can say whether it's stout enough to replace either the BK2 or the F1 in the field. I kinda don't think so, but we'll see.

Lastly, I carry some kind of multi-tool. Either a Leatherman Charge or a SOG Power Assist, usually the Charge.

Now, I can see the prudence of replacing the biggest, heaviest part of that trifecta with a folding saw. I love my 9 (and I give her love too :D ), but having spent many years learning survival techniques that will really serve me well should I need to use them, as opposed to the recreational use we're generally talking about here, I know that the less weight you have to lug around, the better your chances are for surviving the longest. I have seriously been considering removing the choppers from mine and my wife's GHBs and replacing them with folding saws. I plan on doing some calorie-burn tests processing wood with both in the near future. We'll see what happens. Also, another consideration in a survival scenario is that the saw is much quieter. Certainly depends on what circumstances drove you to having to survive off the fat of the land, but in a lot of such circumstances, giving away your position by making a lot of noise wouldn't be prudent.

What was the question again?

Good points. A multitool and Gerber saw have permanent homes in my Goody Bag, but I rarely carry them on my person. Calorie testing sounds very interesting. Keep us updated on that.

I'm actually not far behind you. The BK13 rides along with the BK9, and if I have my usual bag, there's a multitool, another SAK, and a Kershaw Skyline in it.

Only one handgun though.

I typically carry two blades around town: Spydie Manix 2 in my pocket, and the BK14 in the bag.

In the hills I will carry: Spydie Manix 2 in my pocket, BK7 (or alternate my '2), and either my Fiddleback 14" machete or my small belt hatchet.

Sometimes, I'm full of piss and vinegar and mix it all up. I like having options! :D
