First of all I want to say that if you haven't used a gerber instant you should. For the most part gerber is not the best company, but swimming in their sea of crap are a few diamonds. That said I've tried just about every gerber AO on the market and they blew it out of the park with the instant

Now onto why I'm thinking about switching.

The instant has an open back. I get change stuck I it and it's really annoying when I go to open my knife and a freaking dime flys across the room. The kershaw However has a closed back. It also sounds kind of wimpy compared to the kershaw and kind of sounds cheap

Why I haven't switched yet:

the kershaw is a good chunk heavier and takes up a nice bit of real estate In my pocket, yet it has a smaller blade. Another big reason is the mechanism and lock behind the instant makes it really easy to close one handed.

What do you guys think? I know a lot of people use blades interchangeably but I prefer to have one set knife that I'm gonna use until this happens again.

Also feel free to suggest other knives. I'm more than willing to take suggestions as long as it fits the following criteria:

< $50
Modified drop point similar to the other two
Closed back
Assisted opening
Thumbstud or flipper (I don't like spyderco's hole, sorry it just isn't for me)

Any help is appreciated thank you very much

I used to be a big Gerber fan but for the money, I would go with Kershaw.

If you can budge on the blade profile, the Kershaw Volt SS is a fantastic assisted opener. It really gives you a lot of blade for the money, and it's very thin. It also has the back spacer that you want. It's the one on the right here.

And here you can see how thin it is, it really disappears in your pocket :)

I really dig the volt actually. That one is prolly gonna be a second choice for me. I was looking on kershaws website and saw the burst. I'm gonna have to look into it but I like the aggressive look and I also like that it's only a 3 inch blade. Hoping it'll be a little less real estate
