Which to Get?

Well, I'm stuck.... yet again. I had my mouse on the "Buy it Now" button on E-bay for a new Manix 2, but then I saw the Sage 1 below in the "Seller's Other Listings" box. I've researched the Sage series for awhile now and I like the looks of them alot... I don't know why I didn't think of them when I was looking for a new Spyderco.. Anyways, on to the question.

I know the Manix 2 is meant to be a hard use (so I've heard) folder with what I've also heard is Spyderco's strongest lock (not sure about that). I also know the Sage 1 was created for more of an edc knife (but I'm sure it can handle anything I'll be doing). I want to know which I should go with. I'm not gonna do anything hard with either one I get; just the same stuff I'm sure 90% of you guys do with your folders. Price aside... which knife will I be happier with???

I went with the Sage (two, actually) because I prefer liner and frame locks:

That being said, I handled both first, and the Manix did feel more robust. But I'm not very hard on my knives, and, if I need to be, I always have a Sebenza or Umnumzaan in my satchel.

I bought the Manix 2 as my first Spyderco and the Sage 2 as my second. I've barely carried the Manix since I got the Sage. The fit and finish is awesome, and its just enough knife for my daily uses. You'll be happy with either but I can't say enough about my Sage, I'm going to get the CF version soon.

How did the Manix 2 fit in hand? Was it smooth opening? How did the lock function? Same for the Sage too. I haven't handled either......

I'd choose the Sage without a doubt but that's just me, I'm sure you'll get plenty of votes for the Manix also.

The Manix, as you'd expect from a Spyderco, is very comfortable in the hand. The contours of the handle allow both a choke-up grip (index finger in the choil) and one with all fingers on the handle (index finger where the middle finger was in the choke-up grip). It also opens extremely smoothly. The lock is secure, although I wish the protrusions on the cage holding the ball bearing stuck out a little more since I think this would make it a bit more comfortable to close.

Having said that, the Sage gets my vote without any reservations. I have a Sage 1, and it's one of the most comfortable knives in the hand I own. It's very smooth opening (the Manix is smoother at first, but as the Sage breaks in they become comparably smooth), and the size and weight are great for EDC. The fit and finish on the Sage, like seemingly every other knife coming out of Spyderco's Taiwan factory these days, is perfect: blade dead center, absolutely no blade play, liner lock is very solid and engages exactly where it should, etc.

Thanks for the reply! One last question though. I saw a review of the Sage 1 on youtube and the reviewer showed that there were shorta like wavy lines up and down on the blade. He said that the lines hampered the cutting of materials, mainly card board. He eventually polished off the lines... Have you, or anybody, had this problem???

I hadn't ever noticed anything like that on my Sage 1, but I got it out again just now to double check. There were no wavy lines, so I'm not sure what was going on with the reviewer's knife. In my experience, the Sage is a wicked little cardboard slicer.

Thanks for all the info you gave me!!! Looks like the Sage is a winner... I'm surprised no one chimed in and said manix 2, but I'm sure someone eventually woulda... even so, the sage is coming home with me!

I have both a Sage1 and Manix2, the Sage sees far more pocket time. Its a sleeker, more comfortable package, and even with the smaller size and slightly shorter blade, seems to sacrifice little utility
