Leather MUT or Vic Swisstool Black Oxide?
Going to become my EDC MT after combined Basic and AIT training (OSUT) in the Army.
I've pretty much been told flatly that I'll be deploying almost immediately after I receive my duty station and orders. I'm looking for something tough and useful while I'm over there, and while I like that the MUT is geared towards the M4/AR platform I'm worried that it sacrificed some tools to get there. On the other hand the Vic looks and feels like a tank, but not having a one hand opening blade is kind of a turn off. Anyone own both?
Which did you prefer and why? Thanks in advance -Andrew

I think I'd get a MUT and pair it up with a good SAK like a Huntsman or Craftsman - that way you have all bases covered . I have owned swisstools , and profoundly like them , but the MUT is off the charts cool . I often EDC one , the long drivers and the hammer pommel are superb . Don't ignore the Vic. Spirit , most of the Swisstool's virtues in a smaller /nicer package .

There have been a bunch of threads along these lines; e.g.:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/821859-Need-multitool-help-for-a-Marine-s-gift

A running theme is that you'll mostly be using a multitool for mundane tasks: lifting staples, cutting things, opening cans, and so on. My guess is that a combination of the MUT (beefy pliers, pry tool, hammer, screwdriver, decent knife) and a small SAK (tweezers, can opener, awl, slim blade, scissors…) would work well.

But consider these things:

* Whether you might want a standalone one-hand or fixed-blade knife, coupled with a multitool like the SwissTool (or Spirit). Do you want your multitool to be your knife? If not, do you need a big one-hand blade in your multitool?

* What you might be issued (Gerber?), and whether you want to replace or complement it (and think about whether you'll be allowed to carry what you want)

* Whether you'll really use the AR-specific features of the MUT, or whether you'll have a cleaning kit with you anyway.

* How much of your decision is based on what you want versus what you need. No judgment either way! :D

From what I've read, weight is the biggest concern, so try to reduce overlap.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the responses.
I think I'm gonna go with the Swisstool.
I like the tool package better and my unit will have WAY more than enough cleaning gear.
The hammer feature would be sweet though :D
Leatherman should just make it standard. (hint hint Tim)
I'm probably bringing my Izzy 2, Fenix LD20, and a SAK, along with whatever MT I end up going with.
