I am going to close a deal on a Ripper but I already have a Mole Jack. I was wondering how many of you hogs out there have used these knives and have any advice for me. I do a lot of camping, some bow hunting, little airsoft here and there, and about once a year shotgunning for deer. I don't collect so I really only keep what I use, WHADDA YAH THINK??????? Does anybody out there have both of these knives and could do a side by side pic???? Thanks guys.

I don't have either. You got pics? Then I could make a recommendation (I'm tired and not picturing them :) )

Personally, I'd probably go with the mole jack. Just based on pics. The Ripper's just don't do it for me and the serrations would take more work on sharpening than I want to deal with. The mole jack could be useful in tanning an animal hide in a survival situation and I think the convex edge of the mole jack would butcher game better. Also, you may even be able to sharpen it on the back of your belt in a survival/last ditch circumstance.

Note: I'm tired and may be wayyyyy off base. Just random rambling.

IMO, the handle on the Ripper is great, but how much use do you have for the serrations?

The Jack has a versatile blade shape, but the handle isn’t as comfortable as the Ripper.

It’s really going to come down to personal preference, and how you put the knife to use.

Makes sense. The serrations would be great though for bones. My dream team right now is hopefully a MMHW hatchet, SRKW Ratwieler, Mole Jack or Ripper, and GW for the small stuff. I am kicking myself for selling my HD about 2 months ago, but the GW is nice. Ripper would alleviate the need of a folding bone saw. I am thinking of taking my SMF piggy-backed on the Ratwieler.

I have a SJT and do not find the handle uncomfortable at all. In fact I absolutely love the fel. Standard to boot. As far as sawing goes, I have seen others (who do a lot of skinning) prefer to have a designated saw for that kind of job. I agree that the teeth of the Ripper may prove to be a little more difficult to sharpen.

007: I like your "Dream Team". Great choices for sure. Good luck on your choice.

KAAK - I thought the Mole Jack was actually a V grind, not the usual convex..... Are you sure about that??

I think the Ripper is much cooler than the Mole TAC. Nothing against the tact but the Ripper is just that much more of a knife to me - esp for the camp/utility work.

Now for the "Blade Mag Review" ..."Of course both these knives would work just fine for camp/utility work and it is just going to depend on what works for you..." And lord knows they will be more of a knife than most of us will ever need.....:D

Just my opinion

I'd go with the Mole Jack. Mine has a wicked edge, as I believe was the main variation in this particular Jack... And the TIP will stick ya if you look at it funny from across the room, LOL. If I were to make one a user, and better suited to the tasks you've touched on. I'd keep the Jack, and get someone to mod the spine to add some teeth back further nearer the sweet spot, maybe halfway back from the tip?. the MJ's handle seems to be fairly symmetrical except for a bit of a curve, and with that large finger choil, just a bit more room before the blade when you think about your hand's safety, If I could only have one, and could get it modded, it, I do believe I'd take the Mole Jack. Just some thoughts... :D

I just traded away an SJTAC because the handle didn't fit my hand.

For me the EU-17 style grip is much more comfortable.

Now that I know what fits my hand, I am disapointed that I didn't get a Ripper or a BIBB.

If you are going to have both, wait untill you can do a side by side comparison, but I think the Ripper will win.

Be careful what you wish for. ;) I thought the mini-EU17 grip fit me pretty well but it was beefier (spine only??) than the BIBB I owned. I didn't find the BIBB all that comfortable. I'm betting the Ripper would be more like the EU and the stRipper more like the BIBB.

'Course, I like the Mag Fusion and SF grips a lot.

I also have a Muddy Mojo and it fits well.

It has the same combination of a ~EU-17 style grip and a thin blade.
