If you were going to purchase a KMG grinder (which seems to be the one to buy) which grinder would you buy for a novice starting out..???

And if not KMG which kind then??
I would like to start purchasing tools for a shop and any help would be nice thanks again........

Me, since I flat or convex grind I'd go with the flat platten assembly and have it set-up for use with step pullies so I can change speed without the expense of a varible speed. Other attachments and tooling can be purchased along the way.

I have the flat platen and 10" wheel.

If you want to blow down the doors on convex grind save up for a moving platen. The detail wheels are also pretty essential for making stuff, and for a lot of modern designs with tight corners.

Good morning Mike,

If you are on a budget here is another way to go. This is my coote grinder with many modifications. By the way I paid 150.00 new for mine so that's been awhile.

I made a few modifications since I like to do a variety of grinds, made a bigger table, a steady rest for quick contouring etc on the contact wheel, this one is a 6 inch wheel and have the 8 inch wheel for it. I had to modify the channel main frame by drilling another hole to shorten it to allow for the 8 inch wheel but understand coote has modified his machines to accept both now.

The lever arm on the left is my jury rigged belt tension adjuster with a 1/2 inch bolt for convex grinding. Wow does that bolt get warm. Need to put a roller on that.

On the top left I added his small wheel attachment for various contours.

To bad we don't have an ugly grinder contest.

Just food for though Mike. Not the complete answer or there wouldn't be so many varieties of machines and attachments available.

Jim
