I'm pretty happy with my folder collection at the moment so I've been looking at fixed blades. I'm considering two blades at the moment. Oddly they are quite different but both called a canoe pattern.

One is a GEC H73212 Canoe Pattern hunter in 1095 the other is the Queen Cutlery Queen Amber Stag Bone Canoe Knife #86

I'm pretty happy I can live with either steel I just like to hear some opinions and if possible see some real pictures rather than the studio ones...

so the question is who has 'em and which one should I get :D

I think you may mean the Queen #89 pattern, not the #86. But anyway, the Queen is less expensive here, and uses the better edge-holding D2 steel. So unless you just prefer the GEC, or have trouble getting the Queen, I think it is the better buy, even though both are excellent.

Not being much of an outdoors type myself (though I did despatch a pretty scary looking wild apple today with my #92 GEC that I encountered in my office), I was thinking, is the better edge holding of D2 in comparison to 440C an advantage or a liability for a fixed blade? I mean D2 being more difficult to sharpen could be a problem in a wilderness situation, where conditions for sharpening are less optimal.

sorry yes I meant the #89

I'll probably get them both :D but I'm supprised there isn't more love on here for the Queen?

Once you are in the "carbide containing steel" category, which D2 and 440C both are, they all need about the same equipment to sharpen.

The Queen will likely require more effort to achieve the initial edge. Once attained, it shouldn't be much different than 440C to maintain.

I've looked at the Queen Canoe with lustful eyes, but haven't been able to convince myself that I need a fixed blade these days.

Awww Frank! You made me Google this and now my finger is twitching!
Nice looking fixed blade, D2, nice carry size ...dang it!

decided to go with the GEC as I couldn't find the Queen over here

will get it at some point though and put them both through their paces....

I have a Buffalo Horn GEC Canoe. I really like the knife. Takes a nice patina and the blade combo is great.
