So after going folder crazy for a while, I recently became interested in the Spyderco South Fork and started reading up on it around the forums. I had about decided that it was my next "must have" purchase when I came upon this pic:
(NOT my pic, original thread here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1002795-2-Months-with-the-Spyderco-Phil-Wilson-South-Fork)
Now, despite the similarities in general size & shape, I recognize that the BK15 and the South Fork are quite different. Still, considering that one could buy three or four 15's for the price of one SF, it made me reconsider my "needs" and anticipated uses for another fixed blade in my stash of knives.
Since I don't anticipate skinning 15 wild boar in the field and am only just passable at sharpening, I'm not sure that I would really see the benefits of S90V in actual use... (Although this hasn't stoppped me from from buying knives in other super steels, lol.) I was also surprised at how thin the BK15 is ground, it looks to be about 4.2mm vs about 3mm on the SF. Certainly a significant difference, and I'm sure that the SF is a better slicer, but less of a gap than I expected. Roughly comparable to the Military in thickness and the Becker appears to have a nice distal taper as well.
I am now very interested in giving the BK15 a shot. Anticipated uses are for general camp chores and food prep at home, so the extra toughness and thickness of 1095-CV sounds like a more suitable choice (especially if i'm ever going to let any one else touch it, lol). I also like the idea of customizing it a bit. Mainly stripping the blade and making a kydex sheath, but I could get crazy and do some custom micarta or g10 scales as well, maybe even bring the scales forward like the pattern on the SF...
I would love to hear thoughts on the pros and cons of these two and any other trailing point offerings out there I am missing.
