After reading the title and knowing general responses the answer should be all 3 right? In time that may be what happens. For now though, I am going to have to pick just one. Do I need the one I am going to buy? Generally speaking, no I dont. I have other knives I could use. Do I want one? Yes.

Anywho, I want me a new medium sized fixed blade for hunting (large game as well as bird/waterfowl) this year as well as any more fishing I decide to do before it cools off too much. I generally carry something with a blade between 4-6in any time I am out either in the woods or on a boat. It will probably end up getting used for other stuff as well but hunting/fishing are going to be the primary use. Also, whatever I get for myself I am going to get for my father-in-law as well since he is the one who really got me into large game hunting and one for my dad since I got my appetite for fishing from him and his father.

So since I am sure some of you guys have to hunt and fish, which would you prefer and why?

Oh, the BK17 all the way.

Its been a favorite of mine for small game and fish since I got it. It does have a thicker blade than the 15, which would be my second choice, but for dealing with lopping off little feet and heads, that thicker blade is awesome.

Plus, if you have to get into some wood for say, a game rack, or "fish stringer", you'll be glad you got that thicker grind.

That's my $.02 anyways.

Hunting you say? Without a doubt the 17 is made for that. I prefer the 15 for fishing, but even the 15 is a little thicker than I typically use for cleaning fish. I like a nice flexible filet knife (Kerhsaw is making good one's these days). I also think the 15 is an excellent skinner for large game, but wouldn't think it has the balls to bust open the pelvis area on a whitetail. I haven't gotten to test the 15 on a whitetail yet, but I have used it on a couple of coyote and it's perfect for that. For field dressing a whitetail, I'd still give the nod to the 17.

I was thinking the 17 looked like it might be the best all around for what I want. As far as fishing goes, I have a filet knife that I keep in my tackle box but most of the time we end up scaling/skinning and gutting the fish we catch (mostly Bream, Catfish, Bluegill, Redbreast, Bass, Speckled Perch). Plus I usually have a pocket knife of some kind with me as well if I need to do anything real detailed.

Thanks for the input!!

I have not had a chance to use my 17 for hunting or fishing but that is what I bought it for. So I would say the 17 for shizzle.

17

Nice and pointy for unzipping critters, and still tough enough to take a beating.

The 17 definitely is one good looking knife. As of right now it looks like it will be the first one I get. Then my 9 and my two 14s will have some mid-size company :D

BK15 all the way. The BK-5 has been my go-to blade for slaughtering and butchering for over a decade. The BK-15 is just a smaller and more precise version of it. Busting things open and chopping? That's a more appropriate job for an axe.

I don't own it, but I want it...I would recommend the BK17 (I have fondled one and I'm thoroughly impressed). I love my BK16, but it's more for my woody tasks. Haven't had experience with the BK15, but got to test a BK5 so I can only imagine how awesome the BK15 is. Still IMO there is not a bad thing to be said about the BK17!

get the 16.
if you don't like the drop point, you can convert it to an FFG clip point.
If you start with the 17, it's a lot tougher to add metal back in order to convert it to a drop point. :)

I would choose BK16 for best all around recommendation, but BK15 is the clear choice if more cutting edge is desired.

Part of the reason right now I am leaning more toward the 17 or the 15 is because I have several other drop point woods style blades that are ffg.

Yeah, well, you don't have one of these, now do ya?:D

Haha now why'd you have to go and do that Moose (unless you plan on sending that one my way ;) ). But you are correct, I do not have one of those. Instead of getting my knife and the 2 gift knives I am gonna end up with 3 new knives for myself....

Common sense prevails! To be honest, I really like the 17, and then the 15, but only because I use a Blind Horse Bushcrafter for the drop point FFG role. I'll end up with the 16, myself, before long.

Bk-17 gets my vote, since thats the only tweener I have and it works great!

the 17 is my least used, but most carried.

wait, what?

yeah, i have stashed in my water backpack, which i used for lot of things, esp cycling, so it's "always there"...

but it doesn't get deployed a lot, because the 15 and 16 are usually "more handy" at home, and both more likely to get grabbed for a task or trip.

all but esp machax is soon to get a good workout, i promise. lots of woods and brush on the new property
