Personally, I stay away from most knives taht claim military heritage. Don't get me wrong, some do have the heritage they claim, but many do not, and I think it does a great disservice to the brave men and women who fought and died in the name of freedom. Okay, end of rant. Personally, I have the BM Nimravus in M2 steel, non-serrated (140HS). I have yet to find another production fixed-blade in this size category which I like more. I'm really quite impressed with this knife.

There are at least 11 Randall knife models that meet your criteria depending on what you intend to use them for. For general outdoors use they have the Models 4-4, 5-4, 7,8, and 26. For skinning and hunting, they have the Models 11, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23. I have used all of these models except for the #23. They all are great. If your on a budget (and can find one), one of my favorite non Randalls is the Precise Deerslayer Ltd.

I really love this place. Where else can one ask an "'a' or 'b'" question and get answers of "c" through "z"? LOL!!

I have a Nimravus, plain edge in ATS34, that I like very much - very comfortable, good fit and finish. I did feel the need to reprofile the edge to a more acute angle (20 degrees from more than 25).

Of the knives you mentioned I would definitely go with the Nimravus, but I would probably go Fallkniven as well if you expand the list.

BTW-how does someone from Scotland acquire the nickname "Tennessee"?

Second (third, fourth, where ever I fall) the Benchmade. 'Ravus rocks. Get the M2 if you can though. Takes a small amount more care, but it gets so much sharper and holds an edge so much better. I abuse the crap out of it and I still haven't sharpened it from the factory.

I'll throw in for Fallkniven. Not sure which model meets your length requirements, but for the $$$ the S-1 is a helluva knife for me!

All the knives mentioned so far are great knives and I own some of them. Here's my 2 cents: If cutting and slicing are the most important things for knives for you, get almost any of the Scandinavian (Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish) knives (see chaicutlery or ragweed forge). IMO, and my experience, the single bevel Scandinavian grind will out cut and out slice any double bevel grind by a wide margin (regardless of steel type). They are also quite durable and will take a lot of abuse. You can also have 2 or 3 nice ones for the price of most of the knives already mentioned...

That having been said, I am currently lusting for a Nimravus...

The Nimravus is a great knife. I use mine in the field and the kitchen. I have the plain ATS34, wish I had gotten the M2. I avoid partial serrations.
Also consider the Spyderco Moran, a little smaller but vorpal, truly sharp.
I'll also second or tenth Fallkniven and Frost or Erikkson Mora knives. Check out James Mattis' website for more info.
May you be blessed with peace,
Chad

Mr. MacInnes,
I got a Fallkniven F1 particularly for use in your neck on the woods and I've never regretted it. Although I live in England I like to get back to the land of my birth as often as possible. The Swedish knives are the dog's lash, well designed and fully functional for outdoor use. My advice re. the others you mentioned "Gonny no dae that!"

Don't have an F-1 and don't have a Nimravus but, that won't stop me from putting in my 2 cents.

I do have an A-1 as well as BM products.

IMHO, the value, quality, fit, finish, QC and bang-for-the-buck factor, I would go with Fallkniven, hands down!
