A maker provided me with a knife that has a mirror finish. He puts a film of wax on the blade. Held just right in the light the finish looks a little strange, I'm sure because of the wax. In response to my question about removing the wax he said to use Simichrome because he heard Flitz caused problems for some folks (non-specific).

For what?

I guess the biggest difference between the two is that Simichrome seems to have an abrasive whereas Flitz does not.

..in it. Albeit very fine abrasives but it does remove metal.

As to which is better, I have never found much of a difference between the two (Simichrome or Flitz) when used for polishing as they both do a good job. But the effect that they have on the steel seems to be *slightly* different between the two.

I think maybe the Simichrome has a finer abrasive...or maybe it's just a different carrier that the abrasive is suspended in that make the differnet kind of polish from Flitz.

Anyway, I like the Flitz better.

I much prefer Flitz.
And Flitz also makes a liquid with no abrasives, usually found in the gun dept.

I prefer Metal Glo over both of these,I haven't had any weird finishes come from using it and it works on the guards as well as the stel to polish it.

You can remove wax pretty readily with good solvent, like acetone, MEK, lacquer thinner, or brake cleaner (spray can, auto parts store). Non-chlorinated brake cleaner works nearly as well as chlorinated and isn't nearly as carcinogenic.

El cheapo paint thinner (mineral spirits) would probably do it but not as completely.
