Seems like I might be getting the x42 field knife either in sv30 or bg42 though
it was advertised as bg42 {new ones} Should I get both??????

the old ones are BG-42......

the newer ones are the S-30V

I'll be biased (so what else is new) and recommend the BG-42. I've never had any knife with the s-30V.

I had a BG-42 Field Knife and it was pretty cool. Once it got sharp, it was "sharp" like nothing else I've ever experienced. My pal Tim has the gift of putting sharp on steel and he did so....

Here is one Forumite's opinion:

And way down in that post above I wrote the following comment:
"I had the Field Knife w/ BG-42 .... it was a pain to sharpen (I'm very sharpening-challenged) but once sharp, WOW !! My pal Tim put some sharp on it, as I recall he said he could carve fingerprints from his fingertip. The blade said RC62 as I recall, and that is some kinda rock hard which also contributed to hard-to-sharpen. But what an edge it would/will take !!"

Anyway, all that to say WOW, the Field Knife is cool !!!

Cheers,

Carl

I like SOG's BG42. I have both the Field knife and X42 Autoclip in BG42 and they hold up great. The Autoclip currently has a wicked sharp thin edge. After I fing the Field knife, it will need a touch up to make it scary sharp again. Carl's friend sure did put a good edge on it last year.

I have not tried SOG's S30V or any other brands for that matter. Am sure it's good though.

Well i was kinda wishin to get the bg 42 coz the seller only had 2 and didnt
really specify which one she sent me. the last one was confirmed to be s-30v
so i had it put on hold just in case she sent me a bg 42 then i might also as well get the sv 30. Ive always wanted to put a diffrent handle material on a knife
something fancy like inlaid with some gemstones that i have which are gathering dust. so i figure since the x 42s have removable handles,
maybe I could fabricate some sort of {artistic} fancy grips for show which is
quite functional. Since Im not really a jeweler who can set stones with heat
hardened prongs and glueing them to a carved hole seems unstable the
moron in me just might encase the stones in hard epoxy or polycarbonate?
ok Im sleep walkin.lol

I haven't tried BG42 yet, but s30v isn't one of my favorite steels at all. It's still in the "very good" lot, but I hate sharpening it. I'm not sure what "exotic" means, but I don't think s30v is it.

Funny how the x42 description compares s30v to stuff the previous x42 wasn't even made out of! They don't mention BG42 in their little tribute. Better than 440c? Who the %$&# asked?

It's not really what I would call high hardness either at 59rc. That's more like "normal" for good stuff. Buck hardens their cheap base level steel to 58. What does SOG consider 62? Or are we still pretending BG42 doesn't exist?
