Which would you suggest?

Hi everyone, very new here.

I'm wanting to purchase a new SOG and am having trouble deciding which one to go with.
I've narrowed it down to 3 (although that could change). I know that I don't want anything serrated, it's just a personal preference.
Among the 3 I'm looking at are the Vulcan, Trident Tanto & the Salute.
Any advice or suggestions is appreciated from anyone that owns one of these OR for that matter, anyone in general!

Thanks again...

Hi everyone, very new here.

First, welcome to BladeForums and the SOG forum.

You pretty much have them listed in the order of quality and preference.
I don't care for serrations either, or coated blades in general....personal preference.

You've got a wide price range there so its hard to compare ~$90 vs. 60 vs 25.

Lot of folks love the Vulcan. Have not had one yet, but keep meaning to pick one up.

Trident is liked by many, the design has never interested me.

I bought a Salute and traded it off, just didn't care for it. Then I was gifted another one and decided I kind of liked it, so I kept that one. Funny how our opinions change. Still not sure about the adjustable thumb-stud. Decent knife and quite inexpensive.

You might also want to look at the Flash2 and the Twitch's. I have a Flash 1 and 2, plus a couple of Twitch XLs and like them.

You will get better feedback from the members if you can be a bit more specific about price range, preferences, intended use, etc.

I own a Vulcan myself, and like it (though have some questions on the edge retention, see my post elsewhere in this forum).

I have not owned or used the others, so can't offer a comparison. However, I can offer my observations on the Vulcan (note - I use it as an EDC, light-duty only):
PROS:
1. great blade shape - very useful for my intended purposes - food prep, light cutting, some light carving ; blade is nice length, has a good size belly ; not aggressively pointed, so good all-rounder - hard to choke up on though, so not really great for fine tasks
2. Great smooth opening action - rivals benchmade ; you can use the axis lock to swing it closed as well - easiest/quickest knife to close (with a bit of practice) ; have not experienced any of the problems others have mentioned, though the blade can bounce back on you if you're using the lock to open it (and you do it wrong)
3. Light, comfortable to carry in your pocket - does obstruct pocket access though, due to size

CONS:
1. downside on the blade is that it is a bit thick (for my purposes) ; I would never use this for prying or batoning, so the thickness is overkill for me ; also, although blade is very sturdy, the rest of the knife is a bit less so - axis lock feels medium-duty, handle material is GRN, steel liners are relatively thin
2. I have some questions about edge retention - seems soft for a VG-10, though others have pointed out it could due to the acuteness of the edge angle

My conclusion -
It is a good knife, and I would buy it again. Would carry it hunting, it would probably do well processing small-medium game (cleaning, skinning). Would not use it for heavy-duty woodcraft (better suited to a fixed blade and if a folder is absolutely needed get a $40 knife (e.g.Ka-Bar Mule with a lock-back))

I own both the Vulcan, and the trident tanto. To me it's a no brainer. The Vulcan would be the way to go. I've EDC'd the Vulcan for at least a year and it did everything I asked it to. Still looks great, and I still carry it often. I EDC a Lonewolf D'A now. The trident to me, felt cheaply made. I don't know how to explain it, but I was proud to take out my Vulcan, but am embarrassed to take out the trident. Hope that helps. Just my opinion..

Hi I'm a SOG fanatic but another knife that would fit your needs is the Cold Steel Recon1 recieved one as a gift from my father and was blown away by it. It comes in 4 blade types tanto/clip points with or without serations all for around $60. on Ebay these days. Just a beast of a folder. There new lock system is on steriods an the overall feel of the knife when in the hands is amazing. But if you only buy SOG then the Vulcan is a great knife to pick up.
