I have the second type. I would probably recommend the second type because it has more diamonds than the first, but in reality they're the same.

I would get the second one since it has both the coarse and extra coarse grit sizes making it more flexible in it's application.

I prefer the continuous surface ones, personally. I had some difficulties getting a good edge out of the interrupted-surface stones (albeit, not DMT brand), but the DMT Diasharp stone I have is a dream to use.
