I've seen but never made one of these "squirrel tail" knives before. Well, while the cold shop was out of commision seemed like the time.

The blade is 3 1/2" (8" total) and it's all one piece of 450 layer damascus. 1084, L6, 5160 & mild. This is also the first knife I've tried the "Moran" edge on (thanks for the tips Rene!)

Very cool. A while back, I made a couple of mild steel "squirrel tail" letter openers that.
:D :D

Very cool J. I just finished the first one from the cable we did that day. I'll send a pic as soon as I get the light box set up.

Look forward to seeing that Ed. I tried to send this to you this afternoon but, your e-mail is bouncing back at me.

Very nice work, as usual. How did you clean up the tang enough to etch that baby? Looks like a nightmare of a job! Please tell me it's easier than it appears.

Thanks guys.

Clint, It wasn't that bad. The tang isn't nearly as clean and clear as the blade but, what I did (taking "Forum" advice again)was soak the tang in white vinegar. I left it in that for about a week, periodically pulling it out and scrubbing the tar out of it with a wire nozzle brush. You can't see all the contrast of the blade but, you can see all the lines and layers in the twist. I might make a few more of these, they were fun.
