This is what took place!!! My 12 year old daughter Layla is an avid fundraiser year after year for the March of Dimes, so this year I decided to help out. I put together a team of master craftsmen who are friends of mine, and we came up with this collabartion piece, along with some help from Layla. My brother Wayne made a glass topped display box, and my friend Dave Cole in Florida made and donated a tooled folder sheath inlaid with cobra skin. The fantastic camera work is of course by Coop, and was donated along with his time to help promote the efforts as a 'Worthy Cause" on another forum. We sold 50 draws at 30.00 each, and sold out within a week's time, raising 1500.00 dollars in this effort:eek:. Thanks to all that participated from both Layla and myself!!!

Dang, do I ever enjoy getting to see all the great knives that are being posted lately.

Could you please give us a descriptuon of the knife?

That blade is really something. I love the steel, and the carving. The filework is top notch. If there is anything that I think could have been done differently it would have been to leave off the rubies. For me they don't add anything to the aesthetic appeal, but I don't think they look bad either.

John contacted me months ago with a pitch for what he wanted to do. I am a moderator on another forum and we host a Worthy Cause auction occasionally. This one sure looked like a valid case.

Really fine of your daughter to help you and prompt this, John. I was pleased to be involved, but my work was probably the easiest of the entire group. My hats off to the hands-on craftsmen, and Layla!

The final drawing will come in a week or so.

Thanks!

I too have been thoroughly enjoying the pix that have been posted lately. This one is spectacular!!

Sure Keith. here are a few details. Knife design is by me,and general construction, as well as final fit and finish by myself and Layla.Fitting and fluting of the pre-ban elephant ivory is by David Winston, as well as crafting the thumbstud, which is inlaid with mammoth ivory. The mosaic bolsters, as well as the multi-bar blade steel and the damascus spacer material is by Chad Nichols. Filework, gold plating, jewel inlays, and the blade carving, grinding, heat treating and etching are by Don Hall , aka Merlin. And not shown is the display box by my brother Wayne, and Dave Cole's sheath magic. Coop's work speaks for itself! I might mention that the jewel inlays were requested by Layla, and are mexican fire opals, you know how girl's like their jewels!! This was a lot of fun, and I look forward to doing something similar next year!!!!:D

Beautifull collaboration piece, great cause and lucky winner!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Yup...there sure are a lot of fine knives being posted lately and this is another of them.

Thanks,
Peter

Thanks for showing this beautiful knife and sharing this great story. Hats off to all involved.

Thanks guys. I am already pondering next year's project, which I'm thinking may be a bowie. That way I can envolve a different group of craftsmen and not have to call on the same ones.
