Hi

I am making a wedding cake server set for my wedding and I want to use a hidden tang design. I planned on using white corian but I can't seem to find any that is thick enough, all I can find is scales. Now I am thinking of making my own micarta by layering white with turqouise. Turqouise is one of our wedding colors. I know somebody posted on here about how to make it, and I can't remember what kind of resin/expoxy I should use. Does anybody know what kind and where to get it? Or do you have any other suggestions for a good handle material? Thanks in advance.

Adding this on because I forgot....

I am thinking of doing the damascus micarta, where you twist the material. I was wondering how I should compress it since I don't have a hydralic press.

oh come on its a wedding use some ivory;) :D

or a cheaper way
what about ivory micarta?
Holly wood is very very white
stabilized bone handles

i think ariel saliveria has a tutorial on making micarta. use the search option.
good luck, post some pics when you're done

you dont have to have a press but it is nice as i have just got myself a 12 ton
you can use a bunch of C clamps
the epoxy i use and that seems to work well is Envirotex Lite Pour-On Finish
i am going to be having a test of some of the other types one of these days

what size are you looking?

I am looking to make two blocks that are about 2.5 inches square by about 6 inches long. Where could I get the Envirotex? Would that be something that Home Depot would have?

Any suggestions what kind of material is best?

I'll look in the shop, I have some white somewhere, e mail me and I'll send a scan

How does that Envirotex hold up butcher_block? I like the fact that it is clear, I wish the stuff I was using was more clear. It is very tough impact resistant epoxy but is a amber color when mixed. C-clamps work fine. I use either two 6" clamps along with two 8" clamps together or I have set up that is 4 clamps that are all 8".

After seeing some of Butch's work up close, I can attest that this stuff looks great and is tough as nails (no, really, he showed me the butt end of a handle he had been using to pound on stuff...)

Use Corian - you'd need to glue a handle out of 2 pieces of Corian,
say 1/4" thick. First, you mill in 1/2 of the thickness of the tang
into ea slab, proper contour. This way you get a really nice and tight
fit.
