white gold or platinum

I'm buying the wife a 5 year anniversary ring. And we have the diamond. Regarding the metal, the salesman is pushing white gold over platinum (platinum is my preference) because it's "less expensive and easier to remove scratches from". Well, I am willing to concede to both of these and still take the platinum. I understand that white gold is less expensive. Gold is cheaper than platinum to begin with (not to mention being too soft to use for a ring in 24 carat form). And white gold is an alloy after all, zinc or nickel being the main alloying agent. The fact that gold is softer will make it easier to remove scratches from. But I'm still not sold. I have looked closely at white gold and platinum and I can tell the difference. I think I'm pretty much sold on staying with the platinum. The cynic in me thinks that this salesman has a stock of white gold that isn't selling because more people prefer platinum and I'm getting a line. In fact, I may switch jewelers not because I think he's lying (I concede both his points but hey I still like the platinum more), but rather I don't think he's presenting the other side. Platinum is harder, a pure metal and will hold it's value more. Thoughts.

Congrats on the anniversary. Yes, pure platinmu is harder than 24 kt. gold. but you can get 22kt or 18 kt. gold these days that is quite hard (and thus will not scratch as much in the first place). I would not worry too much about the platinum scratching. I am not sure if its value is more stable than gold-- it usally depends on the state of the economy in general, etc. But you are not really getting this as an investment (except in the furture happiness of your marriage. :)

The bottom line is what would your wife prefer.

Don't settle, if you want the platinum get it. It's a ring that she will have on her finger for a very long time and you don't want to look at it and think it's second rate. :)

Hi All-

Platinum takes on a rich luster or patina that looks fantastic with age. It is a superior material for rings. Enjoy the gift.

The fing is not going to be made of 24K.14K or 18K are a fine choice.Gold is softer than platinum so if she is very hard on her jewelery platinum is the way to go.

My white gold wedding band after ten years is now a little yellow... get the platinum ring.

Us knife knuts would rather have a knife that holds its edge than a cheaper knife that's easy to sharpen, and I think your wife would rather have a ring that stays shiny than a cheaper one that's easier to repolish. Not that it's particularly difficult to polish platinum....

If the white gold has nickel in it then go for platinum as nickel can cause allergies in some people. Although many white gold alloyies are made with palladium because of that. So go for whatever you and your wife want. Although are you sure you dont want a S30V ring? ;)

I'm not sure white gold will patina more or less than platinum, but all the old platinum I've seen was dull grey looking.

I had a 24kt wedding ring that I got in Asia and I have seen others in Asian jewelery stores but they are heavy and soft. Platinum is a great metal, hard, long lasting and very distinguished but it doesnt have the flash of white gold. That being said I prefer platinum.

I like the look of the platinum. Sounds like it's maintenance isn't that difficult. Good enough. Thanks.

First,find another Jeweler that doesn't spread b.s.
Then get the platinum ring,as it has higher value, and is more durable as an everyday ring.If you do decide to get white gold instead,I recommend an 18 Karat Gold setting

Our Wedding rings and her engagement ring are all Platignum (spelling)
The eternity ring is white gold and cannot be worn with the harder rings as they will just chew up the softer metal!
I wasn't being really cheap as the eternity ring was 350 euro but a Platignum would have been 5000!

As for our own rings they do not tarnish or scratch and at 500 punts for hers and 700 punts for mine they were neither cheap nor too expensive. The engagement ring was 1600 euro but there you go!

Buy the best you only buy it once, I've found this to be true in all aspects of life!
