White Jigged Bone?

Has anybody seen a knife with white jigged bone? Natural, undyed, but jigged? I know Case has made synthetic white jigged stuff but it looks cheap. I'm wondering what the real stuff would look like with time. Hopefully it would mellow like Ivory.

Also, why can't GEC (or someone) make a run with checkered scales? We never see that any more.

I'm thinking checkered white bone (or ebony) would look really nice on the new 13 series from GEC. No shield obviously...

I've long been hoping to see White Sawn Bone on a Jack or Barlow and I agree with you, jigged white could be really something. I don't know, but it may have to do with polishing the parts of the bone that are not jigged, White Bone often shows black specks in the pores of the bone after polishing, all that stuff could get into the jigging and be difficult to remove? Perhaps? Or perhaps not, maybe because it hasn't been done before...or been asked for, nobody's done it! Just think of the scratted bone on the 'Ancient' TC nobody had tried that for decades. Yet I'm certain a lot of people would be keen on this bone, it has ageing potential to get a fantastic butter colour.

Chequering would also be a big draw but I suspect it's a really difficult and time consuming process so manufacturers may shy away from it. RR produced a nice range of Green and Brown Bone that was chequered, it had a shield too, but this was quite some time back and not repeated. Ken Erickson made a Sportsman's Knife with really impressive Ivory scales that had been chequered, I believe Charlie is the current owner.

Bring it all on I say! The about to be released 13 that has Ivory Micarta scales looks promising indeed.

Regards, Will

I have 1 knife that is jigged undyed white bone, but then burnt slightly. It is from 1992 made by Burnt Chimney Cutlery.

Case has offered white jigged bone over the years (in addition to the white jigged Delrin). I have a Congress from a 1993 second cut series, but there were more (with different jigging as well). OH

I have a white/natural jigged bone Whittler from Case somewhere. Not torched, just typical jigging and buffing. Looks about like you'd expect.

The jigged and burnt white or natural bone has been done a little, but I've never seen it unburnt and jigged or checkered.

Here's some from Moore Maker.

And this is second cut stag which is jigged and burnt, from GEC.

I took a Rough Rider smooth white bone barlow and jigged the scales with my dremel. Looks great.

Rough Rider makes a whole line of smooth white bone knives: stockman, sowbelly, muskrat, trapper, barlow, lockbacks and canoe.
All ready to be jigged if you wish :-)

I have a Case stockman pattern like that, just plain white, no coloration at all. I'll try to get a pic of it later today? Please, excuse the lousy pic. Also, the bone is really white, the blue discoloration you see is from pocket carry in a new pair of jeans?

Pic below, can't seem to,get it posted here.

Here is a Case coke bottle made in 1989 for the National Knife Museum, jigged white bone.

Bone, like ivory (and most natural materials), gains character as it's used. The "burnt" stuff is done to add some dimension to the scales, and it does a good job at highlighting the jigging. But I prefer the color change from being held and worn.

Checkering when done well is incredible; when done poorly it's just awful. If you ever see a MOP knife with checkered scales you'll know. There's absolutely no way to hide an error. The finer stuff, 24-32 lines per inch is what they use on high grade guns. It's a lot harder to do than the 16-18 LIP you normally see.

I've got a mini-copperhead, 2000 or '01, in undyed or "oatmeal bone" with very light corn cob jigging from Case. One of my favorites and carried often by me for 8-10 years. Need to rotate it back in, but I'd be heartbroken if I lost it. Looks great, and has aged well.
Thanks, Neal

Here are a couple of Russlocks - one I sold awhile ago, but I have had the other one in my EDC rotation. These appear similar to the Sparxx series from a distance, but the shield isn't sparkly, and the bone is much richer than the synthetic scales.

I like that one, OH. The color looks like a toasted marshmallow, or the outside of a baked Alaska. :D
