I am headed to NH next week. Will be staying near Franconia Notch. I have spent time in the White Mountains before, but never this area.
I have not had time to really prepare for this trip and am looking for any day hike recommendations. Specifically I am looking for lesser known/less traveled areas where there will not be a lot of crowds. Trails do not have to have any grand vistas or waterfalls etc... just looking for some cool hiking areas that maybe the majority of tourists avoid.
I hike/trail run (occasionally backpack) so I am in decent hiking shape, so strenuous/challenging hikes are fine. I will also have 2 medium size dogs with me that have a lot of hiking experience as well. The one thing I did look up was to check if there are any dog restrictions- I did not readily see that dogs were not allowed on trails. So if anyone here has hiked with their dogs in this area, let me know your experiences.

Trails do not have to be specific to the Fanconia Notch area as I will be exploring some other areas as well.

Many thanks for any info !!

There are tons of opportunities in the Whites. It's worth noting that the Whites receive more hiker visits annually that Yellowstone and Yosemite combined. It is possible to avoid crowds but this will probably mean avoiding peaks over 4000'.

Dogs are common in the Whites even above treelike but they struggle more above 3000' as trails become all rock and footing poor.

Can you say what towns/areas you'll be hiking out of?

Can you say what sort of mileage you are looking to do? Please bear in mind that miles in Whites can count roughly double of other area due to their steep rough trails.

Are you open to pond and rivers as destinations instead of peaks and views?

You may want to register and post to Views from the Top. Their Northeast forum is probably the most active for info for hiking in the Whites.
