Hey guys,

I just got this new old knife. It was passed down to me and had everything in the box, including a receipt from the store that it was bought at and manuals. It was my grandfathers who passed away years ago. I know that this knife is now worth a lot. Mostly seen it in the several hundred dollar range. Crazy how back then it was around $27.00 with a ka-bar sharpening stone in the order. Does anyone know anything else about this knife?

That a great keepsake to have. Your Grandfather had good taste in knives.

I have a White Hunter NIB that my brother bought for me for my 18th birthday.... that was 1983.....

There is something really unique and traditional about Puma's. Enjoy yours.....

By the way....Welcome to BF :)

the white hunter was the top of all the sheath models offered by puma. as far as i know this pattern was exclusive to puma.

Look on the blade side of the guard for imprinted numbers that will tell you when it was manufactured. Is there a date and place of purchase on the receipt?

Puma offered a series of sporting knives based on different world wide locations. The "White Hunter" knife, according to Puma, was made beginning in 1956 for "The East African Hunting Association" probably meaning "The East African Professional Hunters Association". This was an organization of safari guides that got started in the mid 1930's.

The term "White Hunter" had been used in South Africa and East Africa to describe foreign trophy hunters before the turn of the century and continued to be used as a title for professional trophy hunters many of which operated safari guide companies.

A major supplier in the US that prominently displayed the Puma line was Abercrombie & Fitch.
