Well, we had already planned to have a fire pit of some kind ready for the family after Christmas get together for my wife's family down on the homestead. This is the basic version setup by folks who are neither outdoors men or brick masons. Actually setup by a landscaper and a school teacher but they did a pretty good job in a rush. My wife gave me the cooking tripod stand as a gift from her weekend at a Renaissance festival knowing I could, and would, make a batch of chili in it. After seeing the custom pot lid lifter in a previous thread I knew I had to have one so with a proper size piece of green wood, the FBM CG and a few inspirational malt beverages I fashioned one while sitting on the truck tailgate under the backyard light. The fact that there were 7 women in the house watching cooking shows might have led me to go outside and hack on something with a sharp object. I finished it off with a notch to hold the lid secure with my K.R. Jackson Sodbuster. The firewood was, seriously, 10 year old seasoned oak which I batonned with the FBM CG and the baton you see on the lower left corner. I intentionally told my son and one of the nephews to split some of the wood up with their Uncle Jimmy's ax which they failed to do horribly. No injuries but the circulating aunts finally made them stop before somebody got hurt and they only managed to mangle one piece of wood. They were all amazed at the process of controlled wood splitting with what they all called a GIANT knife and a baton. There is William roasting a dog over the fire and the onions and garlic sauteing in the pot. The first image is rendering down some bacon for bacon fat to saute the onions, garlic and peppers in. I never even got to taste my chili since I had to hand off the spoon, once all of the ingredients were assembled, and haul ass 70 miles back home for my mother's 81st birthday supper where I grilled rib eyes and drank the old man's Evil Williams. That's how us Po' white trash do Christmas in the low country but it sure was fun. Yes, we didn't have a boom box so we pulled up one of the cars, rolled down all the windows and played CD's on the car stereo. Merry Christmas.

Sounds like a perfectly wonderful Christmas to me!
Although, in describing the unique character of the fire pit, you failed to mention my favorite part of the pics--the massive rusted pipe young William is using as a bench.
That things just awesome.
Any word on how the chili turned out?

You look like you need some snow. I'll send it right over.

Sweet pics. Looks like you had a great time! :D

That's actually a terracotta (clay) pipe but it still was heavy as hell to move!

Im sorry, but I fail to see where the "trash" part comes in...looks like GOOD OL' FUN TO ME.

Looks like a good time to me. Wish I could get a permanent fire pit in the back yard, but the stupid HOA would probably freak out...
