I'm curious whether or not the handle etch was done by Buck or someone else. Any opinions? I like 111's and really like these display cases, so I had to have it, real or not. I'd also like opinions as to what the handle wood is.

Dave and Dave,
The handle inlays appear to be fibron. Fibron comes in many colors and shades. It is a synthetic that resembles wood. I believe pakkawood is essentially the same thing from a different manufacturer and thus is marketed under a different name. My comments are based upon my memory of a conversation I had with Leroy Remer a few years ago. I am not 100% sure I remember it all correctly but the above is my best attempt!

CJ Buck has just replied to a thread you have subscribed to entitled - Red Fibron Handles - in the Buck Knives forum of BladeForums.com.

I don't remember the exact year but seems like 97 or 98. They were supposed to be for a subsequent year but we were so excited about the design we pressed them into that current year's new products.

As to Fibron...that was a brand name for the laminated/impregnated birch handles. We use the same material basically from a different source today

Thanks. So it is really wood. Fibron is just the term or name for the process that is used to produce it.

I like that WTU 111 Dave! Now you need to buy a Smith & Wesson WTU in 460 cal to make the ultimate combo ;)

Thanks. I'm not man enough for a .460!

Sure you are Dave. That gun can fire 45LC, 454, and 460 ammo; just shoot the 45CL most of the time. That way when you are showing off to your buds at the shooting range you can slip a round or two of the big bang stuff ;) Oh and don't forget to show off that new 111 of yours:thumbup:

OK, I could probably handle that. I just get spooked when I see a caliber that starts with a 4. That more than likely comes from when my best friend (?) talked me into shooting his .416 Rigby. Once was more than enough!

I here you on the over kill in power. I have a friend who was hung up on getting a Weatherby 460 mag. That rifle cost about $2200 20+ years ago. When he got it I was subjected to it's mule like kick:(; that rifle in a 460 weatherby Mag spits a 350gr slug at about 2800 fps.

I do like some of the big bore calibers as my handle states. I like the 4570 caliber; it spits that same 350gr slug at a more reasonable 1700 fps...it kicks but not nearly as bad.
