Whittler - my companion

Hello!

I am inspired by the thread "Cult of the one knife man". There are some interesting and important ideas worth thinking of.

I am collecting and researching knives for almost ten years. I had many of them but all the knives, which I really like, have classic laconic lines. Getting older I became a "classical man": I like classic films, classic rock, blues and jazz. My car is classic sedan. Even my clothes became classic. So there was no interest in continuing collecting modern knives. I wanted to research traditional ones. I think hobby must develop people. And our hobby develops us: we expend our repairing and sharpening skills, we research history and technology of cutlery. Our hobby makes us interesting people.

Another reason for opening this thread is my wedding anniversary and the wonderful gift from my wife - Boker Beer Barrel Wood Whittler knife. I was very pleased with this gift and I want to have this knife with me constantly.

Sure I will have and use other knives. I am supporter of right tool for the job idea. But I am going to carry just one knife.

I want to have a thread to observe changes in my knife and my experience. I started using my Whittler more than a week ago. This is great and high quality knife. As far as I can judge it have only one shortcoming - it is too hard for me to open little blades.

My companion helped me to cut some slivers for fire making.

The next day we've made shavings for the smoker.

This weekend I was whittling toy knife for my little son. He takes part in our family outdoor activities and he is asking for his own knife often.

Today I was disassembling my son's old cot. And used chopping blade to hook some elements.

I became interested in wood works recently. So I hope I would have many chances to use this wonderful knife. And to share my impressions.

that beer barrel knife looks really great, nice serpentine frame, I have heard many good things about the Bokers for wook carving. I also carry a whittling knife regularly, it is a very elegant pattern. This one is with Bourbon Barrel scales:

Beautiful knife and thanks for sharing. There were times I had considered being a one knife man and I have actually been just using one pocket knife for the last 3 years or so. I use other knives (mosntly belt knives) for other work, but my scagel fruitport is what is always in my pocket. However, this may change as I recently ordered a new knife so I may again carry multiple knives :)

I wish you all the best with your knife journey and I look forward to your updates along the way.

That is a nice knife! I love the Boker beer barrel set, I have a congress and it is a great knife that gets lots of use. I did not know there was a whittler version of the series, I will have to go check it out:thumbup:
Here are my three whittlers, a GEC, northwoods, and Chamblin.

Zharik,

Great article and terrific photos. Look forward to following along.

I have a Boker congress whittler. Agree with you, can barely get the blades open.... But, I'm an old man with arthritis.

George

I I can certainly understand the 'classic man' . And your English and grammar are very good.

zharik,
you state your case very well indeed. i like whittler patterns too. Boker makes excellent knives, i especially like their carbon steel congress knives. i own several Bokers including a candy stripe whittler. all have excellent fit&finish. backsprings, blades, handle scales, pins and walk and talk are spot on. the Beer Barrel wood handled whittler i do not have.
i enjoyed reading your story about your evolution into Classic goods and lifestyle.
thanks for posting

Glad to have you here, zharik. I'm a Boker fan myself. That whittler of yours is nice! A great present from your wife. I look forward to more whittler tales as you use it.

Thank you everyone for your attention!

Thank you! I am doing the best I can. Anyway English is not my native language so I apologise for possible mistakes.

Very interesting question. I would say spring setup is not standart for Whittler pattern. The Boker doesn't have spacer between the springs. So the springs adjoins tight without gap.

Yes, sure I have several axes and hatchets. Hatchet+folding knife is very common set for forest travelling in our climate. My favorite one is Hultafors Trekking Axe 800 g. This weekend I am going to make some wood works. So I'll post pictures of this hatchet.

Zharik, I appreciate you starting this thread. I have recently gotten into traditional knives. In a very short period of time, I have accumulated a decent number of single bladed patterns. However, the story of the whittler/split back design caught my attention when I saw The Apostle P's anthology video (working my way through the series). Since the I've set my sights on a split back whittler being my next knife. I look forward to your posts and others as I look to purchase my own whittler.

This is a most welcome thread, the Whittler is my choice of 3 blade knife over the Stockman any day.

Böker do an extremely decent knife and here's my Whittler in Apoloosa Bone with a couple of coins very kindly sent to me by Mike B. I like their tapered backspring construction, mine shows no gaps at all.

I hope this isn't off topic but my enthusiasm for the Whittler (Queen No.48 is a really nice one too!) forces me to show my Tidioute 38. This has split back construction and GEC made a wonderful long but not hulking knife with this frame.

Nice that your son is asking for a knife already, you've brought him up very well:thumbup::D

Thank you for the spring picture! I figured that was the arrangement, but wanted to know for sure. My Canal Street Cannitler is similar in design.
My new Boker should be here in a few days:)
