Hey everyone. I'm looking for a knife for whittling, preferably a fixed blade with a small <2.5" blade, and it should be fairly thin with good edge holding. Should I look for a knife designed specifically for whittling? or would something multipurpose do?

THanks.

thanks for the suggestions guys, I could use some more. BTW, stjames, that link didn't work out. Could you give me some info on the knife you were recommending?

Thanks

Your best buy for a fixed blade whittlin knife can be found for about $30-$40 at Wood World in Rockville: Wood World Web Page

or at Craftwoods in Timonium: www.craftwoods.com

Both places stock wood carving tools and books as well as wood of all types. Craftwoods in particular is a great resource for whittling and carving. Since you list Rockville MD as your home, try Tim Barrett at Wood World first. Craftwoods in Timonium is just off the first exit from I83 north of the Baltimore Beltway (695). Craftwoods also sells on-line.

Look for a 1 to 2 inch blade with an large (5 inches or longer) ergonomically shaped handle. Most folks are not familiar with this type of dedicated carving knife, but once you try one, you will never use anything else again (as long as you are home) :)

I forgot to mention www.woodcraft.com

They have a store in Rockville near WhiteFlint.

You can see the type of knives I am talking about here: Bo-T carving knives

Hmmm, if the link does not work, go to woodcraft-->Carving--->Knives---->Bo-T

Also look at FlexCut and Rick Butz knives in the same place at woodcraft. You can get both Rick Butz knives for $25 and they will do almost anything you need as long as you are 'whittlin', not carving

Sorry about the bad link, not sure what is wrong.

wow. thanks for the location-specific info Paracelsus. I'll definetly be checking those places out. its good to see someone else from rockville.

Kershaw double cross is a great little whittler. Edge keeps up pretty well, easy to touch up, looks nice. But then again, I'm not that great of a whittler.

Cheers - RLR

I'll second woodcraft. They've got a great selection of not only knives but other carving tools as well. And pretty much anyhitng else you wouldever need in a wood shop ;)

When it comes to carving tools, I have been very happy with Swiss Made, Pfeil ( those two are the same company I beleive), Diobsud Forge, and the woodcraft brand tools are very good for the money also. Sorby makes good stuff but I don't have any real experience with them.
Check out the swiss made chip carving knives at wood craft. Some of them make excellent knives for whittling also.
