Whittling and Grinds

I have several traditional slippies and SAK's. I was whittling old dry sticks for marsh mellow roasting for the neighborhood kids and my Moore Maker, Muskrat in 1095 wasn't getting the job done though it was sharp. My SAK Pioneer Rancher worked great. Is it due to the grind? The SAK's blade is much deeper (spine to edge) where as the California Clip is much much less room and being that blade thickness was similar the angle was flatter on the SAK than the Muskrat.

I was thinking about re-profiling the Muskrat. I appreciate your insights.

It sounds like the bevel at the cutting edge is the culprit rather than how wide the blade is or what its primary grind is like.

I'd reprofile it myself. You can also take the edge angle down on the SAK if you haven't. A reprofiled SAK whittles quite nicely in my experience. A Victorinox Farmer goes to the woods with me often. Using it to eat my lunch right now actually :D

Also, I think the SAK's have a lightly convexed edge, which makes whittling a little easier IMO.
