Whittling chip?

I have approached some of the parents in my son's cub scout group and we have discussed giving the boys an opportunity to earn a SAK cub scout knife.
It would be tied to behaviors and community service. When we approached the scout leader, we were informed that before we could do that, the boys needed to earn their whittling chip. Does anyone have the guidelines for this?
I offered to lead this activity and the scout leader was to have given me the guidelines, but hasn't yet.
Any help appreciated.

im2smrt4u give a good reference to the boy scout requirements, however the Whittlin Chip is part of the Bear Cubscout requirements under "Shavings and Chips". Here is a useful link:

There are other good resources on the web if you search on Cub Scout Knives in Google.

Funny you should bring this up, I'm teaching knives for Cub Scouters (knots also) at a Pow Wow (adult leader training) this coming weekend, and did a little research on the web for resources.

I think a decent SAK is a good choice for cubs, as opposed ot the cheap ripoffs which are too dangerous.

Cubs WILL lose their knives, so nothing too expensive. Also, one handed openers, locking blades, and so forth are probably not appropriate for 9 year olds.

After years of scout leadership, I've developed folsom's law: "The average intelligence of a group of boys is inversely proportional to the number of boys in the group." Try to set some strict rules on when the boys can have or use their knives (Pack meetings are probably not apporpriate, for example.)

I also believe, though I would have a hard time citing the reference, that BSA does not sanction use of knives in its activities before the Bear year, usually third grade.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.
That is probably why they are somewhat resistant.
My son has his own collection, and has even traded here through me.
It is a hobby that we share. I suspect that this will go on the sideline until next year.

SAK makes a blue handled penknife with the cub logo on it.
