whittling help

not sure where to post this but I'm putting it in here. I'm trying to carve out the center of a block of wood... like when you make the ball in cage, or carve a shape into the wood.. but i just don't get how to do it. If anyone does, and I know there must be someone here who knows how, can you help me to understand the concept of it...

Get a copy of A.E. Tangerman's Whittling and Wood Carving. That, and a good sharp knife, should get you started.
 
thank guys i will definetly look into that book. and thank you Luis for that post.. it helped my carving greatly i can now carve out squares and other shapes with ease..
