Disclaimer: Apologies to the mods if this thread has been posted in the wrong area. Feel free to move the thread if necessary. I also did a quick search of BF to find a similar thread and didn't come up with much, so I figured I'd start one up.

I've recently become very interested in whittling and wood working with my hands. I don't have a shop full of machinery and wood working tools, just a small knife collection. But whittling has become a nice past time activity while I listen to music or a podcast. I have a few walking sticks that I've fashioned from fallen branches that I come across, and I know of a few ideas I've see on YouTube. But I figured there would be some proficient whittlers on a site dedicated to knife users/lovers, and I'd like some more ideas for projects.

I'd like to see some of your whittling projects. And maybe the tools you used to make them. Anything from walking sticks and decorative spoons, to original projects.

Thank you in advance :D

There are lots of excellent books and magazines on wood carving. My favorite book is E.J. Tangerman's Whittling and Woodcarving.

I recently saw that book mentioned in one of the threads posted. Definitely gonna get that pretty soon. Thank you for the suggestion ;).

I've completed my first 2 projects and already have plans for my next project, but need a few more ideas for useful stuff. Projects that are less focused on being decorative, and more focused on their usability.

I am not skilled in any way, shape, or form in whittling, but I love to do it.

It is incredibly relaxing for me, and a great way to bond and get to know your knife.

I like to find pieces of driftwood, that already have a sort of template, then try to enhance or exaggerate that form.

It is also fun to make walking sticks, and lately I have been making drum sticks. This takes a bit more skill as they need to be similar diameter, length, and weight.

I have also made spatulas and wok spatulas. Chopsticks, tongs, and primitive bowls. I am considering purchasing a spoon/hook knife to increase the quality of the work.

As a project, I suggest you create a Mors Kochanski "try stick". Making one requires techniques & skills useful for both general wood carving and for outdoors living (bushcraft).

I posted some whittling ideas in this thread of mine from a couple years ago. It's not just whittling, but other hobbies that use knives.

Loved reading through that thread. It's the exact reason I got into whittling - Looking for a way to put my knives to use. I've always lived in a fairly large metropolitan city, but I'm a country guy at heart. Having my humble collection of knives is wonderful, but I like to USE them. Whittling has given me a really enjoyable and relaxing outlet, while also helping me to appreciate my knives even more than I did before (special shout to the Spyderco Manix 2 - such a versatile design).

Appreciate all the responses in my decaying thread ;)
