Who and When?

The knives in the pictures below were given to me by a good friend in America who has since died. As you can imagine, they have a pretty high sentimental value for me. I have no interest in what financial value they might have which, in any case is probably zero, that's irrelevant.

The large one is a case, no surprise there. Tang stamp is:

Case XX
USA
. . . . . . (6 dots)

What I would like to know is, who made the small one and approximately when. I know it's more than ten years old but, apart from what's stamped on the tang, I know nothing more about it. I thought maybe one of you smart fellows might know.

It doesn't show too well in the pic but the scales appear to be some sort of mother-of-pearl, quite probably artificial.

On the tang is:

U.S.A
P2281782

I have seen that P tang stamp on Imperials. You may want to post in BRL forum to get definite answers.

The number 2281782 refers to the patent number held by Imperial granted in 1941

Here is the link to the patent. It pertains to the attachment of the scale and bolsters to the frame by clinching

I have a match to the little knife but has a shield on the handle on the stamp side - I'd be interested to know also. My grandfather gave it to me along with a larger 3-blade that matched. Wish I still had the larger one...

Just realised both pics were the same. :o

I've now included the real second pic which is a closeup of the little knife.

Hey there Gaj
How you going?
Im sorry I cant help you with any info on the knives...just sayin' that I think its real neat to have those two knives from your friend!!...Very special knives...good of you to show us them..it will be interesting to see the info that comes from this.

Howdy,
Nice knives, especially knowing the source. Can't help with identification unfortunately. Wanted to mention that one my Case knives lost the shield, and when I contacted Case, they mailed me a replacement. No charge. Just something to consider.
Good luck,
Fred
