Hey everyone. I’m in my 50s and would like to get a skinning knife made up that will be passed on to my son when I croak. I’m wondering if you folks have any recommendations on up and coming knife makers who are making nice knives, but haven’t yet had their prices go high high. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read. Have a great day.

Malanika and dulo are two that I have dealings with. I know Jelio does really good ones too based on forum feedback...give them a Google.

If you want good quality without breaking the bank, you can go Bark River.

Hope this helps!

I’ve had some great customs made by David Mary here on the forums. He is great to work with and can make just about anything you’d like. He works with some really cool steels too like Magnacut and LC200n if that’s of interest to you. He has pretty quick turnaround and his prices are extremely good for the quality. He’s my go-to custom maker for sure.

Good luck with that, I've heard the language of frogs is pretty tough to get right... it's the accent I think. ;)

But in all seriousness, some excellent makers have been mentioned, and I am humbled and honored to have been named among them.

I, too, am excited to work on your knife Dergyll Dergyll !

I just wanted to add a caveat, that my turn around times depend on the nature of a build, and whether I have a run already started in the desired materials, and whether they are stainless (which I have heat treated by JTknives JTknives in the USA - he is a busy man with lots of orders and a young family to take care of) or carbon steel (which I have heat treated locally by Andy Pomorski, whose close proximity allows for faster processing).

Robert (Bob) Erickson is not only an extremely talented knifemaker but he is an outstanding human besides. Stand up guy all the way around.

I have had the pleasure of seeing his work up close on several occasions and the fit and finish are excellent. Bob puts a ton of care, time and effort into every knife and it shows.

Plus he utilizes all the latest and greatest steels, as well as the old classics. His prices could increase significantly and he would still have a ton of sales. But so far his prices, considering all I just mentioned, are almost too good to be true.

What's not to love about that?

Matt Bailey is a great bladesmith with good prices and he is one of our members here.

I always say Michael Morris , affordable quality hand made knives and one hell of a good guy to work with

David made a dagger for me, I gave him a rough idea what I'd like and he designed it and made it his own. Very happy with it.
