Who are the good (performance, price, quality) sword makers these days?

Since reading a few threads about some Jerry Hossom swords a while back, I have been casually looking around to see what is available.

The ~$150 imported models I have seen did not impress me. Some of them looked pretty good for a wall display but, most of them were just a little too crude to get me to cough up any money. They also didn't seem very usable due to either bad balance, poor quality grip, questionable steel and heat treatement, etc.

I have found the European styles have had a long term appeal to me but, I have also recently been eye'ing the Japanese style blades more. I would like something with a hand and half or two hand handle, a balance point in front of the guard or at the guard, not too heavy (I need to be able to move it effectively) and, a length (cutting edge) in the 28 inch range.

I have looked on-line at Criswell and Tinker Blades. I remember my favorable impression of the Jerry Hossom Espada. Where should I be looking and who should I be talking to? I would like to be able to make an informed choice in 6 to 18 months. My projected budget would top out at around $1800 but, could go a little higher for the right piece. Thanks!

You should contact Howard Clark if you are interested in Japanese-style swords. He is am ABS Master Smith and offers blades in several steel. www.mvforge.com

Sid - You can get excellent (read authentic reproduction) european 12-15th century swords from Angus Trim. Check out Albion at http://www.albionarmorers.com/. These are the best out there. Better yet the cost is very reasonable - $400 range.

Have you considered asking on the Sword Discussion Forum here under General Forums?

That's one of the reasons why it's there.

Just got off the phone with Jerry a few hours ago.....he is making swords that are built to perform!! A few Japanese style ones too. Check out his site, or even better, go to the Blade Show in Atlanta so you can pick one up, play with it, and take it home!!

You wont be sorry (one of these days he is going to be charging a LOT more for those things!)

Don Fogg does really nice work and makes using blades in that price range.

To be honest, i have little personal experience with swords (other than wanting a few i can't afford).

However, i have a friend who is a Sword Collector, and he highly recomends Bugei swords..
