I'm curious how many members came here as collectors and have turned into makers as well.Maybe add a little info. as to what stage your making is at.:)

There are several. . .

The first one that pops to the top. . .Dogman. . .Bob Doggett !

I started collecting custom knives and realized very quickly I wanted to make knives. Good timing, smart decision making and great friends have helped accelerate my skills in two short years. I definitely could not have done it by myself, and I am very fortunate to be in a position where I can make what I want, how I want, and control the direction of design and skills. Because of the people that continually help me, I strive to make the absolute cleanest knives I can. I feel I would be letting them down by not respecting what they have taught me and the time they have taken from their lives to show me the Way.

I didn't come to the CKD Forums as a collector but started my "knifelife" as a collector a number of years ago. Have been a maker for around 5 years and full time as a maker for several years now.

...I'm trying like heck!!!

Can't qualify just yet, but soon..... :D

I just changed a blade shape on a knife that I was about to sell (thankfully I didn't) and it came out way beyond expectations. As I sat down with my little tool kit I knew that there was a good chance that I'd ruin everything. At about 1:30AM, after about 2 1/2 hours, a piece of art had emerged. I immediately reloaded a few bullets and shined my boots. Hope this isn't the beginning of something.

Jim Smyth aka CJ. Just bought one of his knives at the Chicago show! Very nice, it's Carson meets Ralph with a good helping of Smyth.

I remember meeting Jerry Hossom at a big gun and knife show several years ago. Not sure as to how long he had been making knives before then, but I do know he had a whole table full of custom knives(not his).
