I've loosely considered getting an AFCK Axis lock to compliment my 710, my main tactical EDC. In comparing the specs of these two knives, I've noticed something interesting.

The AFCK is listed as: 3.96" long; .125" thick; and 9.38" overall.

The 710 is listed as: 3.9" long; .115" thick; and 8.8" overall.

The 710 is significantly smaller in most dimensions, but is known to be 4.5 oz. The AFCK is only 4.38 oz. Why the decreased weight of the AFCK if it is larger than the 710? Is the opening Spydie-hole of the AFCK large enough to create this difference, while the knife itself is bigger?

Also, the 730 series, the Ares, is quite a bit shorter than the 710, but just 1/10th of an oz lighter. Is the 730 more stout than the 710? I realize the blade is about the same thickness, but the handle must be thicker. Is this true?

also maybe the hole in the blade

The original AFCK had Ti liners. I don't know for sure, but it sounds like the Axis AFCK does too judging by dimensions. The 710 has steel liners, they can be thinner than Ti and still acheive the same strength. The Ti liners on the AFCK are thicker, but still weigh less.

For what it's worth, the new Axis AFCK has 410 SS liners. The weight differences are so small that the weight-reducing holes in the liners could explain it.

It could be the holes. It could also be that the AFCK's blade is relatively thin for its length, compared to blades of similar length.
