Who can identify JFK's knife?

I was watching a documentary on JFK and PT-109 the other night and noticed JFK seemed to be sporting a sheath knife in the photo of him and his crew (I'm assuming he's the one on the far right). Here's the photo:

If the photo doesn't work, you can check out the photo at http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/4035/crew109.jpg

Anyone have a clue as to what that knife would be that's on his belt?

Sorry, but the picture doesn't come up on my Internet Explorer and Geocities refuses to give me access to the page.

Well it worked this afternoon when I posted it this afternoon, as did the link. Does one have to take a class in this UBB stuff to get it to work right?

If you use this link: http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/4035/

and click on the Album button on the left, you get a list of several JFK images. The only one I can not read is the PT109 crew image. It seems to be FUBAR. Try contacting the webmaster for that site.

You posted everything correctly Kirch. That picture is messed up on the web server. There is nothing you can do about it.

I manage to pull the picture from the original link. The knife doesn't show up clearly enough in the picture for a positive id. It looks to have a 5-6" bowie blade with a heavy crown stag handle, and perhaps a riveted leather sheath with 5 rivets on one side.

Anyone have access to an old Abercrombie & Fitch ctalogue? The Kennedy's, like many other families of such prestige (ie. Roosevelt's), were known to deal with that company. Otherwise, it could be a vast array of Navy issue blades of the era.

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, It's the sudden stop at the end.

Well this is a WAG since I can't really see the picture, but the size of the knife and the largish pommel make me think it's probably a Navy Mk 1. Most of them have large pommels of aluminum (aluminium for the rest of the world), though some were even wood or plastic. One of the recent issues of "Knife World" had a good article (though limited) on the Mark 1.

Anybody got a clearer picture of JFK from his PT days?

Paul

Ya know, that's a lousy place to carry a fixed blade... given the right (or wrong) circumstances, the blade is poised where it could slice right into the old femoral, or worse. Muy macho.
