I have a Kershaw folder. I like everything about it except the steel. It is certainly not bad steel but I am thinking I want a knife with better steel such as ATS-34. I have been looking at the various production knives and some of the custom knives and so far none of them thrill me. The main reason I am not finding a knife that appeals to me is the scale material and thickness. My Kershaw has a rubber handle which I like very much. It is easy to grip, even when my hands are bloody. I use this knife for breaking down an animal in the field. The Kershaw knives with ATS-34 have a harder plastic material that I do not like. The Gerber EZ-out with ATS-34 is similar. The Gerber Gator has a rubber handle that I like but is too big. The Gator Mate with ATS-34 steel is tempting but is a bit too small for my big hands. I wonder if any of the custom knife makers could replace the existing blade on my Kershaw with one of their high quality ATS-34 blades. Kershaw is not willing to do it. Any thoughts on who I could contact? Thanks, Brian Carlson.

Hi Brian,
First of all welcome to Blade forums. I hope you enjoy this place and it's cast of characters at least as much as I do.

I am not a knife maker, but my first thought here is that you might end up being surprised how much labor it would take to fit an existing factory knife handle with a custom blade.

I am going to redirect this post over to Shop Talk. The folks over there might have a different opinion or ideas.

Rufous, welcome to BFC, hope you enjoy it here.
Here is the email address of a guy by the name of Nick Wheeler, he lives in your neck of the woods, and will be up front with you.
He does great work also.
