Ever get a knife and figure you can make it better, new scales, sharper blade, file work, or maybe even change the shape of the blade.

With most tactical style knives in the above $50 range being able to be disassembled, anyone with access to a few tools and a little knowledge has the ability to change their knives.

I took a Schrade Walker Liner Lock and changed the blade from a spear to a clip because I wanted a pointier blade.

I've changed spacers, done filework and, replaced scales.

I'm sure I'm not the only tinkerer out there how about you folks, what changes have you made?

There's been a bunch of forumites who modded Frn Spydies, and I thin it's great-I've never done it to the extent some have-just polishing sharp edges and things like that.

Ever take apart a Camillus Dominator? I'm thinking of upgrading the nylon washers to something better.

Haven't yet, but I'll be messing around with that kind of thing soon. I have to tinker around a bit before really getting into knifemaking.

I always tweak my knives...Even the excellent ones can be made just a little bit "better" with some tinkering.

HERE is a great thread we had going in the gallery for factory knives that have been customized. I'd love to see it revived but have not had time to do any new mod's myself lately.

Feel free to bring her BTT :)

I've probably customized 25-30 knives over the years and have some thing brewing currently for my AFCK - it'll probably get a satin finished blade and some CF scales, maybe bone...

Here's a couple...

Never met a knife that I didn't want to "customize" in some way!:D Though most of my customizations revolve around switching over to p-b washers and doing some polishing work of screw heads and pivot area flats. Always figure I can improve this area on factory knives as most don't do this finish step to save final cost.

Wade F. you should have no problems in switching over the Dom to p-b washers. Easy job!

I polished the blade surface of my leek. I scratched it when sharpening so I gave is a satin finish (used 600 grit sandpaper in a tray of water). The gray finish just came off too easy. Also took off the ribs on the blade top of the mini tsek with a hand rotary tool. couldn't reach into my pocket without hurting the back of my hand. Both jobs came out quite well.

T. Erdelyi, it seems to me that you just really wanna be a knifemaker, and haven't taken the plunge yet. Go for it! :)

Oh, and I've done more than my share of "customizing" knives. I have several Busse's out in the shop, in various stages of incompleteness. ;)

I'm about to get laid off if the county can't balance it's budget, (fat chance) more likely than not I'll have some time on my hands. I have the basic equipment, I have the knowledge,I'm a Millwright/Machinist/Fabricator/Mechanic,(I still wish there was one word for all that), I've already made a kit knife, 2 from scratch,(came out mediocre, I'm still learning the grinding curve), and I've modified a slew,(is that a word?).

I guess it's like anything that comes from your heart and soul, it's often difficult to "expose that part of yourself" (private joke) for the first time.

I just recieved a tekna micro knife and the sheath does not retract all the way anymore. Fortunetly I found the blue prints online so I'm gonna take it apart and fix the spring. I used to make miniature swords for a hobby (haven't in a long time, miss it),and fix jewelry
so I'm actually looking forward to this project.

I "customize" knives all the time. I like to look for broken knives at garage sales and stuff.

The first one I did was a old CS Voyager that my dad dropped and broke the tip on. I made it into a spear point, reground the edge, put a hand rubbed 400 grit finish on it, and put some traction grooves in and rounded off the spine. It is still his edc and he loves it even more. (It makes me feel good when I see him use it.):)

Right now I have too many projects going on and too much school work to finish any of them.
