Who carries a Buck/Strider?

I had the opportunity to handle the Tanto-point version (not the newer revised version), and was pretty impressed. Grinds were dead on, fit and finish was excellent, blade was centered, had *thick* liners, grippy G-10, solid lock-up (although the "shape" of the lock up was kinda strange). I liked the posts as well. But the thing was monstrously huge, and felt like a brick.

Does anyone actually EDC one of these things? It looks like a seriously fun knife, but with all those alternatives out there, I'm wondering if it's worth buying.

How I got to handle one is a story in itself, was off on a class trip to Kyoto today (Nijo-jo area), to see some historical sites, then had the rest of the day off. Some friends and I wandered around looking for food, and I found this small knife shop, carrying a huge variety of production folders, along with some customs made by Japanese makers (kitchen knives and stuff). Really was great to actually see a local (Japanese) knife shop, and the guy at the counter knew knives fairly well. Oh, and mark up was horrendous. More than double the price of an internet dealer.

Occasionally, I carry my large Buck/Strider spearpoint. Not at work, since I work at a Govt facility, and am limited by the 3" blade length. Great knife! A little TOO big for comfortable EDC, but I still love the knife.

I carry a mini spear point 1st production run of 500 bg42 models and use it all of the time. It is a good knife. I should have gotten the larger model too, but didn't.

I recommend them highly.

I had the mini for a while. The blade was too thick to be useful for normal cutting. Even after reprofiling, it didn't cut worth a damn. I sold it on ebay. Ended up making money since the original deal was so sweet.

Personally, I find the Buck Strider great value for money. Yes, some people may find it a bit big for their taste but you can't ignore its strength and ruggedness.

I find it big, strong and friendly. :)

I carry a Mini-Strider sometimes when doing outdoors type stuff. IMO the clip is too tight for urban EDC but good for running through the woods since it is less likely to get lost than the typical clip knife. The checkering on the grip is a bit rough and might be abrasive to pockets. I bought mine for a tough folding survival knife I could carry on a plane but that is not possible anymore. If I were to buy one now I'd get the full-sized version and probably the spearpoint since the tanto's secondary edge is not sharp.

I EDC an 882 (Tarani SB4.T) -- it's plenty tough enough for my white-collar pencil-neck requirements, and I like its blade profile a bit better for run-of-the-mill tasks.

:)

Just make sure that the size is right for you before you buy...and that includes how much they can restrict access into your pocket for other things (ie. keys, etc.), as they're "big" folders.

Every now and then I do. I have the first production run spear point and while it is rather "WIDE" it carries well. It is right at home in BDU pockets while hunting or camping great outdoor blade.
