Ok I have a couple of questions, and bear with me, I'll get round to it eventually. Some background is in order first. I recently bought a Dozier Razorback with neck sheath from Keven Deaton. Now, this is my second Dozier. The other is a K4 Straight Hunter. It was purchased to replace my Spyderco Wegner in the deer woods. After doing some heavy duty cutting chores which probably bordered on abuse with the Wegner, I decided to primarily use fixed blade knives in the outdoors from now on. I settled on Doziers blades as best buy custom users. The Razorback was purchased as a small game and personal utility knife. I've found it so darned handy I've ended up carrying it all the time. The Dozier Razorback is now edging out my Wegner Jr. and mini AFCK as daily carry knives. I'm trying to get accustomed to the neck sheath, and have contacted Normark for new horizontal belt sheaths for both.
OK, here are my questions, how many of you carry fixed blades as daily users/carry knives? What made you decide to do so over a folder? And how do you carry your FB? Opinions of neck sheaths?

I carry a FB because there is no lock to fail. Also, if all hell breaks loose I personally find it easier to grab my TOPS Hawk Recon or whatever I may be carrying at the time than opening a folder. The same goes for my Emerson La Griffe and other neck knives.

I recently bought a bladerigger associate harness. I am extremely pleased with it as it allows me to carry big knives discretely and easily.

I do carry folders, but only when circumstance allows only that, or just as back up blades.

Actually, I tend to carry two FB's daily. Both are from Cold Steel. One is the new Carbon V Kobun which goes in a pocket sheath. The other is the Bush Ranger which goes inside the waistband.

But I don't carry them instead of a folder. I also carry a Spyderco Military and a Civilian. This may seem a bit over the top, even to the knife nuts in this forum. But as I've trained and considered the different scenarios, it's what I do for now.

All you need is love... a sharp blade and a full clip

I've been carrying my myerchin fixed blade in the inside pocket of my coat. -mainly because I can't find any better place for it. I switch out vehicles with my wife so often that it's almost a sure thing it would be in the other one when I needed it.

Guess the solution is another knife

I usually carry(when I'm not at work) a custom neck knife made by Donald Lange, ABS Mastersmith. Don made this knife for me several years ago, and its pretty handy. Overall length 6.25" with forged W2 blade. Blade is a mini clip point bowie shape. Cutting edge is exactly 2.5". Nickel silver single guard with just enough room for a finger in front of the guard. Handle is really nice piece of dark, burly Cocobolo just the right size to fit 3 fingers on. I use this thing for all kinds of stuff. I wear it in a leather pouch.

I carry a variety of smallish puukkos on a pretty regular basis, although I also carry folders. Usually, I'll just cut the top of the pouch type sheath off at the mouth and then carry the knife in my front pocket. The mouth of the sheath will catch on the top seam of your pocket when you draw, so the sheath stays in your pocket. Plus, if the leather is stiff enough, the mouth of the sheath will stay open and allow for easy resheathing of the knife.

Besides the tactical advantages, fixed blades are generally just a lot more comfortable to use. Modern folders have those thin handles and clips that bite into your hand, so it's nice to get away from them every once in awhile.

I usually have a Dozier straight personal in the horizontal kydex sheath with me. It is very easy to get to and just as easy to snap the knife back into after the cutting chore is done.

I recently started with daily fixed blade carry on a very small scale. I bought a Sean Perkins Littlewing, just 41/2 inches long. In its leather pocket sheath it's so small and ingenious and handy for small daily jobs that it's finding its way into my pocket every day.

I recently started carrying fixed blades in the neck carry fashion. I hadn't been real happy with neck carry until I recieved my Lil Blue II from Ray Kirk. The kydex neck sheath came with a elk hide "cord" for carrying around my neck. The thing that made me enjoy this carry was the adjustable bead on the elk hide. The neck knives I had before never seemed to ride where I wanted them. Now, I can adjust the length of the knife to where it is comfortable and concealed very well. No more of the butt of the handle poking out. I can tell now this will not be my last Raker knife, the thing is just awesome.

Thanks for the replies guys. Nobody has any concerns about knife retention when that neck knife is hanging upside down on your chest? Dozier does a good job with his sheath and it seems very secure, however, it would be more than a little embarrassing for the knife to drop out of the sheath in a public setting. Not to mention dangerous perhaps to yourself. It also would be very uncool to lose a $150.00 custom in deep snow somewhere, not realizing the knife had unsheathed itself somehow. I have carried the knife in the pocket as was mentioned above. The sheath does catch on the edge of the pocket and the knife comes out handily if needed. It requires two hands to resheath the knife whichisn't really a big deal, just a little different.

Well having it actually happen to me before, I now test sheaths to see if they would allow the blade to fall out while running or similar actions. If the knife was designed to be a neck knife, it should be safe to use it as one.

i carry a fixed blade because i cut a lot of fruit with mine and i am tired of the juice gumming up the action. i also carry a fixed because i have started making them and would prefer to carry one of my own over a kershaw or cuda (most of the time) i have used a neck knife from REKAT and have had it come out of the sheath a couple of times when jumping from a high distance, once could have been ugly, but luckily i saw it in time. now i almost always carry on a horizontal belt sheath.

When I'm working I carry my BM 940,but any other time I carry My Bud Nealy Y2K.Comfortable,concealable,and secure, versatile carry system.

Yes, for a while I was carrying the Fällkniven VM1. Worked fine for me.

However, nowadays I´m carrying a Spydie Calypso Jr Lt. and I am very satisfied with it

It's great for business!!
At my full time job I carry a folder. It may be a Spyderco Civilian but folders only is the unwritten rule! I work for a large manufacturing company as a CNC machinist. Most of the shop staff carries a folder of some sort. I may have had something to do with this....leaving hundreds of knife magazines in the cafeteria and finding the best deals on factory knives!
Other than that it's fixed blades, usually neck knife size. I carry in neck sheaths, horizontal cross draw and IWB, all of my own design.
I try to keep my meaner looking models like my Hawkbills out of site in neck sheaths. I've found that if I can make the most "tactical" looking knife as visually appealing as possible...Non knife enthusiast sometimes will take an interest. Something as simple as a single mosaic pin added to a carbon fiber and bead blast knife will give it a less threatening look.
I spend quite a bit of time around salt water, fish and other game. For me, folders are just too hard to clean after such an encounter.

I carry a 3" drop point in 440C made by Newt Livesay. It comes with a handy horizontal kydex sheath. It has a good sized handle even though the blade is short. This is good because no matter what I an doing, my hands stay the same size.

Fix blade carry on a daily basis is a ritual where I am concerned. The Dozier being my favorite small utilitys, finds comfort and ease of deployment from its horizontal kydex belt sheaths. Bobs Agent and Strait Personal are my favorites and mostly used. The Razorback will find a home in one of Bobs horizontal belt sheaths. Especially for its slim and small profile, the entire unit can be removed from the belt in a moments notice and be slipped into ones trouser or vest/coat pocket without much discomfort. Hence your "slip" or pocket sheath. The belt clip also serves as a platform for the thumb to aid in snapping the blade out of the sheath. In mostcases it simply pops off and forward with a squeeze. Just as rapid to deploy as a folder. Additionally the sheath can serve as neck carry as well. Use a ball chain to slip thru its rivets at the end and you have an instant neck sheath. The belt clip in the rear is only minimal and won' t really get in the way of concealment. Unless one wears a tight muscle shirt. Ladies not withstanding.

Ahem...

Bobs sheaths are made quite well and have that distinctive "snap" when sheathing and unsheathing. You could request for a tighter fit. Bob would position the sheaths rivets accordingly.

Fix blades are primary for me. The larger ones being a Polkowski made in one form or another. Folders are complimentary.

Sir,

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">How many of you carry fixed blades as daily users/carry knives?</font>

I have a Allen Blade steel MEUK in my backpack. I would carry it on me, but my job does not allow for open carry, and the laws of Idaho are strict on concealed fixed blades. But, I make sure I have one, because I know that there are some tasks that folders are not good for more than once.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">What made you decide to do so over a folder?</font>

See above.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">And how do you carry your FB?</font>

It is in a belt sheath, wrapped in a scarf in my bag.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Opinions of neck sheaths?</font>

I used to carry a Spyderco Moran in a neck sheath, they work.

Personally, I think a knife should have many sheaths, neck, slip, belt, pocket... A sheath for every way that you would carry that knife. That way it is very easy to always have the knife on you.
