Who carries a Tyrade

Just curious as to how many folks here carry a Tyrade? I don't read about these knives a lot, and even less about them being a carry knife. I realize they are a limited edition type knife, and I'm in the process of trying to get a second one to put up, and I wonder if that is a reason for so little information as to how they carry and how they cut, and how they hold up. I do know that mine carries like a dream because of the flat profile, feels good in the hand and really feels solid in the hand due to the thick titanium handles and even thicker blade, and cuts extremely well, for what cutting I've done so far.

So the question; Who carries a Tyrade as an Every Day Carry, and how do you like it?

I will as soon as I get it back! :D

The Tyrade is a great EDC. The Titanium handles really cut down on the weight. A smaller pocket clip might help, but overall its a great knife!

The STR clip I put on mine is what made it an edc for me. I know I bitch about the clips and I do not mean to insult anybody, it is just that I will not carry a knife that sticks too far out of my pocket or has a clip that is too noticable.

Anyone else toting their Tyrades? Just found out today that the dealer I bought mine from got his last two in today and has put one up for me to get at the end of the month! Maybe this way I will not be as hesitant to really use my edc Tyrade!

I really like the looks and features of it, but it's just too much money to throw around for me at the moment.
I would really like to hold one before I buy it.

An old friend who moved away told me that he picked one up and loves everything about it.

I applaud Kershaw for its continuing innovation, but the Tyrade's a little big and heavy for me. If they come out with something that has the composite blade w/ zdp cutting edge, I will have to buy. I have a zdp mini-cyclone that I have used at work quite a bit. I compliment Kershaw on the job they did with the framelock. I have customs that do not lock up as solidly and securely as the mini-cyclone.

I don't like assisteds and wish that kershaw would offer non-assisted versions. A couple years ago at a knife show I saw some fairly inexpensive Kershaws (from Japan, I think) that were EXTREMELY smooth manual openers. That's what I like! I realize that offering more options means higher cost of mfg, of course.

wutitiz, thanks for the kind words.

We do have composite blades in both the Leek and JYD II (manual), at much more affordable prices than the Tyrade. You will see some Composite ZDP versions in the future.

Of course you know your Mini is also manual as well.

We've done a bunch of manual's over the last 18 Months. Somebody will be by to list them all, but I'll start:
JYD
JYD II
1993-2 Gentleman
Groove(s)

I was never really fond of the assisted knives myself but the Tyrade just works so well and so smoothly that I have gained a real appreciation for the Speed-Safe.

You also mentioned that you really liked the job Kershaw had done on the Mini-Cyclone framelock. Well they have done another excellent job then on the tyrade framelock. A problem I have with some framelocks is that the spring just does not seem stiff enough, and this also goes for liner locks, but on the Tyrade the lock is plenty stiff but not a problem to unlock....if that makes sense. The framelock I measure all others against is the Sebenza. The Tyrade framelock comes closer, if not maybe exceeding, to the feel of the Sebenza than any other framelock I've felt! And the way Kershaw has built the blade tang to cover the top of the lock just makes using it hard easier on the mind.:D:thumbup::D Just another reason why I want a second one.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I keep my mini switch on manual, but on rare occasions the switch flips while in my pocket. Also there is extra uneeded (for me) weight. And finally, I'm guessing that opening would be smoother on a dedicated manual only model (like those I saw at the show I mentioned).

One thing I do love about the assisted craze is that so many knives now have flipper guards. I like my fingers, and so I like a guard--not for use as a flipper, but as a guard.

I'm really looking forward to those composites w/ zdp edge. That's one I will buy as soon as it hits the shelf.

And Cutter17, I know exactly what you mean about the lock. It's amazing how it's easier to close than most, yet locks up so solidly.

You would think the two would be at odds. I've never had a Sebenza, but I've had my share of frame & liner locks, and I still can't get over how good of a job they did with the frame lock on my ti/zdp mini-cyclone.

Anymore Tyrade Toters out there? Still carrying mine and loving it!!:thumbup::thumbup:

I think it is pretty well known that I love the Tyrade. I love it more with each day actually and I was just thinking about that today. I can't help but fantasize a bit when holding it. Earlier I was watching a Stargate SG1 episode of the team going back in time through the Stargate to 1969. Can you imagine doing that carrying this knife and being caught and searched at area 51 having to explain just this knife let alone the other goodies you took back with you?

To be honest I was just looking at all my Kershaws of recent months, Blur in SG2, JYDII in SG2, Damascus Leek, Tyrade, ZT301, and more and you can't help but just stand in awe at what Kershaw's guys are knocking out here in the way of super knives. I look especially at the Tyrade and I think to myself, now imagine this knife being with you if you could travel back in time to 1969. Can you imagine the stir a knife like this new age Tyrade wonder knife with the chocolate space age titanium handles with carbon fiber overlays, pocket clip and modern day lock, torsion spring assisted opener, and recurved composite blade would cause? Anyone looking at it would be completely in awe at it because this says all over it 2007/08. This is a bold sign of the times we live in and what a time it is huh?

I tell ya, looking at this knife and playing with it daily does something for me. It makes me proud to even be involved in the cutlery business when I see the marvel of this Tyrade and what it represents for our time right now on the planet. Just to be able to actually say we were there living it sharing the dream is something to be excited about. Its a big time historically for sporting cutlery and kitchen cutlery too I think. We have achieved so much today in the great things we have access to now. I mean look at what we can achieve today.

I wonder if the guys that work at Kershaw have any idea of the magnitude of the impact of their trend setting knives or the impressions they leave on history with each new model that comes out of that factory? So many new levels of achievement have been made by the guys there that its unprecedented in the history of knives. Thomas you must really be proud to be associated with the company and the team you work with there leading the way into the future! To be right there on the cutting edge with all these new developments is by itself something to hold your head high about. Its a heck of a time. I know I am very proud to have been involved in it in the small way you have allowed me to be.

When I'm even older and grayer than I already am I will be able to tell my grandchildren, yep, I bought this one, and went in debt to mastercard for this one here, and as I recall I slept on the couch after getting this one here because I had to have it when it came out. :D

Yeah, great post Steve!
Especially like the SG1 reference, fun episode.

Gotta figure anyone who saw it would be blown away and maybe wonder if it didn't come from another planet.

Who knows, with the Tyrade so far ahead of the curve, it might even be taken for Goa'uld technology! I agree, great post Steve!

Thanks for such kind words Steve. It's funny, as the knives you mention are not the money makers, but more just the fun projects that we produce. We have learned a bunch manufacturing these type knives, and utilizing some of these exotic steels. I really believe it is making us a better factory, and will hopefully allow our facility to reach new levels in the future. We're blazing our own trail, and the Kai USA of tomorrow will be one of the best facilities on the planet.

Deep thoughts Steve. It is an incredible time to be involved with cutlery for sure.

I am very proud. It is very team oriented here. There is a vast level of experience in all departments, and we work hard everyday. Making knives is not the easiest way to make a living these days, but we take pride in our work and accomplishments. With Kershaw, Shun, and ZT, the future looks mighty bright as well, and we trust you all are looking forward to the next generations of Kai USA Knives.

That's like making Dodges and Ferraris
In the case of knives, I can afford both.

Hell Yes!

Nicely put, STR. (I may be looking you up for a low-ride clip for my soon-to-arrive Tyrade)

I just won a Tyrade on e(vil)Bay, and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. This was a historical knife that I didn't want to miss out on.

I have been drooling over this knife since it was offered for a passaround earlier last year. I kicked myself for missing that opportunity, and applaud nygiantsfan3342 for running the passaround. (was that your knife?)

I have fallen into the Kershaw world rather late in the game, and the passarounds have helped push me there. This will be my 6th Speed-Safe knife in 2 years, and definitely not the last. I "really" need an SG2 Ti JYD II, next.

Next up: ZT Knives!

A few years ago, I met someone very high up in the eschelon's of KAI at an A. G. Russell event. He was a tall Japanese gentleman. (No, I don't remember what his name was.) It was right at the beginning of the KO revolution, and I knew from what he said that I should expect great things out of Kershaw over the next few years. He was right.

I recently added one to my rotation... I purchased it from Jeff at www.knifedealsplus.com great guy, great store, and fast shipping.

Any way I really like the Tyrade.

It would be nice if on the Offset and Tyrade you could keep the OEM style pocket clip but purchase just the clip in Low Viz matte black from Kershaw...

I sorta fall into that category myself. It has only been since August of last year that I have "rediscovered" Kershaw, in the form of ZT Knives. Even though I only have three Kershaw products; Kershaw Tyrade, ZT0200, and ZT0500, I intend to have more! These are the first knives I've had in a while that I felt I needed two of each. That speaks volumes to me since I decided a year ago that I would have only users and no safe queens, yet I am just excited about getting another one of eac as I was when getting the original!:thumbup::D
