I am fascinated with this type of knife. I understand it has a rich history. It's mainly an European knife.

Long, slender and with some elegantly crafted handles, it is a beauty to behold and matches some of the finest in modern times.

Who is a lover of the laguiole?

I have several of them and absolutely love them. They are one of the first knives I bought in a cutlery shop. They have one of the strongest back springs I've ever seen and overall are very well made. The only reason I've haven't added to what I've already got is the fact that there are so many different makers putting out a "lagioule" that I'm not sure what is "real" and what isn't. Would definitely appreciate any input you get on this thread.

I thought to be authentic that it had to be from a cottage cutlery shop in the region of Laguiole? That this "village" or whatever was the only one (made up of several cutlerers) that were allowed to use the "bee"?

Nope. The bee is used by everybody, it doesn't guarantee nothing. You find a lot of crappy knives displaying the bee. There are also french makers that produce very good quality laguiole knives (like Pataud).

I was in Europe recently and hoped to buy one in Paris. Found some
beautiful models in a knife shop and at a shop in Brussels. Their low-end prices started at $230 Euro for knives I've seen on the web for $90 US. Did'nt think it was worth $140 more to say I bought it in Paris (of course I did'nt order one when I got home either, still lusting for one!)

Unfortunately I didn't read your link until after I posted my last response as the link answered most of my questions. Its a very informative link. I'd be very interested to know if importing into the US if they have problems with their pre-ban ivory making it through customs.

They use legal ivory and can export it. You should check if USA legislation allows you to buy items containing pre-ban ivory.
The safest way would be to choose mamooth ivory which is legal everywhere.

I realy think that laguiole knives rocks what i like so much about them is the look it has, and the way it fits in your hand, the ratio between blade and handle, and no clips.
